Year 9 My Career Insights

Once again this year our students are being given the opportunity to explore their insights into potential careers and what they might aspire to. The program is being delivered for the Department of Education and Training by the Careers Education Association of Victoria.

The program starts with an online aptitude test which will be delivered by our own qualified career practitioners in Year 9 classes over the coming weeks. The students then will have the opportunity, together with any parent interested, in participating in a one on one interview with a counsellor to look at what the aptitude test has revealed.

It will identify student likes, interests and strengths and address them in the context of potential study and vocational pathways. It is a fantastic program and those who’ve participated in the subsequent interviews have been most enthusiastic about what they’ve learned. If parents haven’t already completed and returned permission forms to the Mooroopna campus for this they should do so as soon as possible.

Year 10 - VCE Industry & Enterprise

All Year 10’s participate in some kind of formal vocational education or training at GSSC. The vast majority completing the VCE Unit 1 Industry & Enterprise class each Wednesday. This class runs for the whole year, as students only have it once a week. It is a fast-tracked VCE unit and successful completion provides potential credit towards both a VCAL and VCE course in Year 11.

A small number of students have, as an alternative, secured a school based apprenticeship or they may have commenced a special VET program.

VCE Industry and Enterprise assists students to understand the nature of work, labour markets, employer expectations, understand their own vocation and training preferences and to develop their career action plan.

A key part of this will be completing some ‘experiences of work’. For most this will include a work placement. Typically, such placements (Structured Workplace Learning) will be for one week. Students will be encouraged to complete one, but it is possible they may be able to do more.

Given that there are approximately 370 students in Year 10, not all students will be able to complete placements at the same time. Instead, we will identify 3 weeks (one in each of the first 3 terms) when particular I & E classes will be scheduled for these placements. Ideally they’ll happen then with their own class but this may not always be possible.

Mr Crosbie, Mr Lythgo and Mr Reid’s classes (6 classes in total) will be attempting to complete theirs in the week March 22-26th. Dates are still being finalised for term 2 and 3 for the other 10 classes. Further details will be provided to each class as soon as they become available.

As a school we will be as flexible as we can be to accommodate work placements for our students. Sometimes it may be preferable for these placements to take place during school holidays.

Defence Force Work Experience opportunities

Students have diverse vocation interests. Some areas are very difficult to investigate through work placements e.g psychology, counselling, security, policing. However, the ADF does run a limited work experience program with placements available in Victoria and elsewhere. To investigate these and how to apply follow this link https://bit.ly/3sfegGC
