Junior School

This week our Stage 2 and 3 students, accompanied by a couple of proficient Year 2 swimmers, enjoyed a day of friendly competition at our Swimming Carnival at Lawson Pool. Despite an ominous start weather wise, the skies cleared for us and we enjoyed a fabulous day of competition. Participation rates were high and the encouragement from the sidelines raucous as swimmer after swimmer pitted their skills against their schoolmates.

There were many fine individual performances and some exciting relays. In the end it was MacLaurin Kelley who were the triumphant House.

Congratulations to them and to all those who participated in the Carnival. Such an event could not have taken place without wonderful support from our parent community and we had many helpers in various official and support roles throughout the day. Thank you to all those parent helpers for contributing to the success of our carnival, to the teachers for their supporting roles and especially Mrs Harris, our Head of Sport at BMGS, who convened a highly successful Carnival.

Our School team will now be selected on the basis of the results and those selected will be looking forward to competing for the School at the HICES Swimming Carnival on 8th March. Unfortunately, this year there will be no WAS Carnivals as there have been in the past due to COVID concerns and the changing status of member schools.

Student Leadership is something we value at BMGS and our Year 6 cohort have been involved in early discussions regarding the meaning and purpose of leadership, and the opportunities available and emerging. Part of our approach to student leadership is in providing opportunities for all of our Year 6 students by forming leadership teams aligned with areas of interest; co-curricular, school service, sustainability and wellbeing. These teams are currently being formed. Additionally, there are specific leadership roles associated with various school activities and these are allocated as necessary as co-curricular and other activities get underway. An initial set of leadership positions has been determined following peer elections for House Captains. I am pleased to announce the following positions:

Hughes Deane House Captains: Georgian Anicic and Liam Mackie

MacLaurin Kelley House Captains: Fergus Fulton and Elizabeth Nealon-Cook

Ziele Pitt House Captains: Taylor Bohm and Xavier Stephens

Also announced were the Performing Arts Captains for this year: Amelie Emmerson, China Khoo and Georgia Kustra.

Congratulations to all of these children. The staff and I are very much looking forward to working with these teams and the extended team as the year progresses.

At Springwood our Year 4 children have an early opportunity at leadership and are currently working together to run Assemblies and take responsibility for various service roles on campus. Later this term we will be holding peer elections to determine leadership roles at Springwood for 2021.

In growing leadership in our children, we strive to grow in them the values the School instils. Good student leaders learn to be empathetic and active listeners, develop their ability to work in teams and to solve problems. They develop good organisational and communication skills, help to resolve conflict and role model tolerance and inclusiveness. Good student leaders develop a sense of service, responsibility and purpose. We will be giving our student leaders various responsibilities throughout 2021 to enable them to develop these and other important leadership skills which will serve them well for their future. Capacities developed in their leadership roles should have a natural flow through to the learning and relationships in the classroom where good student leadership is vital in leading to productive learning environments in which students can serve and mentor each other, and take responsibility for the learning of self and others. I am confident this cohort will be a fine group of children to work with in developing these skills.
