Stand Out Team

On Friday the 9th of February, the Stand Out team from Wellbeing held a stall at the school swimming carnival.

We sold many items varying from lolly bags and cans of soft drinks to snow cones and fairy floss, raising an amazing amount of money to go towards future Stand Out projects, including a portion going towards the painting of a “Respect” themed mural in the school.

Thank you to all the students for contributing to the cause - it was a great day out and it was amazing to see everyone getting involved.

The Stand Out Group worked very hard towards this goal and it was great to see it come together.

If you would like to get involved Stand Out is a student lead equality and awareness group that meets every Tuesday lunchtime in wellbeing, everyone is welcome to come along and check it out.

RSC Auto Show

The Car Show at Ringwood Secondary College is coming soon.  With the support of our Ringwood Training facility we will be holding our annual event on Saturday 17th March between 10am and 1pm at Hill St Ringwood Secondary College.  This year we have added some additions to the event with a car boot stalls and a silent auction on the day.

With the money raised, in conjunction with a generous $1000 donation from someone within our college community, we are hoping to fund 3 specific programs this year.

  • Breakfast club:  Breakfast club provides breakfast for the college community every Tuesday morning.  The program not only offers a warm meal but also great community and opportunities for students to meet other students and get to know them.
  • Alternative to Schoolies:  We are aiming to launch our first 'Alternative to Schoolies' program which will look to perform some community service activities along with some inspiring speakers to challenge our school leavers in their futures ahead.
  • Motorbike restorations:  We are looking to engage middle to senior age students who may be struggling at school with a project to repair/ restore an old motorbike with the aim to build self esteem and school connectedness.

Thanks for your ongoing support.

Year 7 English!

Year 7 students have jumped straight into the Descriptive Writing unit with great confidence and energy! Students are currently working on their first assessment task, the descriptive writing folio, and have enjoyed applying a range of different figurative language techniques to their writing.

One of the activities that some students participated in to help engage themselves with their 5 senses was a sensory walk around the neighbourhood of Ringwood. Students really enjoyed being able to leave the classroom and the school grounds to complete their work.

One of the students made mention that it was really beneficial to “take time to simply be in the moment and focus on the little things” and that “this made it way easier to come back to the classroom and write.”

International Students Chinese New Year Lunch

On Thursday February 8, the International Students enjoyed Chinese New Year by organizing a celebratory lunch.

Shirley Luong our Multicultural Aide, worked tirelessly to make this event a huge success! We were excited to see the amount of enthusiasm and effort the students put in by making dumplings and traditional Chinese food.

With official Chinese New Year taking place on Friday February 16 welcoming the year of the Dog, we were all excited to have this opportunity to celebrate early and forge lasting friendships early in the year.  We look forward to continuing this event annually!

Happy New Year!

Languages News!

As always, the start of the year has been very busy! We would like to welcome our Year 7 students to Languages at high school and we hope that they are enjoying their French or Indonesian classes so far.

Our senior students on the other hand are busy preparing for their first SACs. For our Year 11 French and Indonesian students this involves a 10-minute oral conversation with their teacher. We wish them all the best!

I would like to welcome back our amazing Languages team. Teaching French this year is Ms Eleni Stathatos, Ms Rosemary Devereux, Ms Mink Schapper, Ms Sjnelle Jordan, Ms Beatrice Dauguet, Ms Marissa Lee and Ms Caitlin May. Teaching Indonesian is Ms Virginia Martin, Ms Jessica Lundie and our newest faculty member Ms Vera Sumanta. Bu Vera is our Indonesian Language Assistant this year from Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia in Bandung. Bu Vera will be working closely with all students studying Indonesian throughout this year. We feel so lucky to have a native speaker at the College and we hope that Bu Vera enjoys her time with us here.

On Monday February 12th Ringwood SC was fortunate to have a visit from Pak Dadang Suhendar who is the founder of our sister school in Bandung, West Java, Indonesia. Pak Dadang enjoyed visiting Indonesian classes throughout the day, but most importantly, we were able to put some plans into action in regards to the next phase of our sister school relationship. Students from Sekolah Tunas Unggul will visit RSC in October of this year. Please continue to engage with future newsletters as well as Compass as we will be advertising for host families’ closer to their arrival.

Salam/Regards,

Student Leadership Day- February 14

Session One:

On February 14, all of the newly appointed year seven ambassadors walked down to the Sage hotel in Ringwood to participate in the Ringwood Secondary College leadership day. We were joined for the morning session by other new leaders from Heathmont College and Norwood Secondary College and later, by year eight to 11 leaders from Ringwood and Prefects.

We talked about teamwork, being a role model and playing to your strengths. We learnt that whilst we might not be good at everything, we should really focus on what we are good at and work on those skills. I’ve really been thinking about that idea ever since.

In the afternoon, the workshop had the year seven to eleven leaders break up into groups with the Prefects. I was placed in the Chaplaincy group. Here I learned all about the amazing breakfast program that the school runs. It made a lot of sense to me, and I will be getting involved with this program over the year with other leaders.

I’m really looking forward to this year at school - meeting new people, trying new things, participating in new activities, it’s going to be a great year!

Noah Philp- Year 7 Ambassador

Session two:

Dave and Stew from Sport and Life Training (SALT), presented to us about their program that travels to schools and sports clubs promoting a positive Australian culture through sport.

We were lucky enough to be involved with this leadership session and were first given an overview of the three year old organisation. Dave Burt, current CEO, founded SALT in 2015 and since then they have run thousands of sessions all around Victoria, including at the Western Bulldogs and Melbourne Football Club.

After an introduction, we were treated to a well-informed presentation, giving many tips about enhancing leadership and teamwork skills. We were exposed to famous athletes’ stories about success and failure including how these highly distinguished sports men used unity and guidance from those around them, to build their sporting careers.

Throughout the presentation, we also participated in a few fun teamwork based games that tested all participants, but also provided an engaging platform to test out our newly expanded skills.

Overall this session was a huge success, as we all learnt an extensive amount of knowledge about the various areas of leadership. With this new knowledge presented by SALT, the year seven to 11 leaders are now set for a big year, full of exciting events to improve and advance Ringwood Secondary College and we’re sure the whole RSC community is eager to see the positive impact as the year goes on.

Alice D’Arcy and Michael Syme- Year 11 Level Leaders

Session three:

The third session of the leadership day was run by the Prefects. We started off with a game of ‘untangle,’ which turned out to be quite difficult with so many people! We then split off into our portfolio groups and worked with our teams to brainstorm and organise activities for the year. The year sevens who have a generalist leadership role, were allocated to portfolio groups, learnt about each portfolio and offered contributions to their group. There were many great ideas and we aim to make them come to fruition later in the year.
