Strength and Kindliness

Shrove Tuesday

On the 1st March we celebrated Shrove Tuesday. Our Year 11 VCAL students prepared the delicious pancakes that were distributed across the school. Shrove Tuesday is a time of feasting before the fast of Lenten time. Lent is a period of prayer, fasting and almsgiving.  All money raised from this event and the distributed prayer boxes that went to each TA group will go towards Caritas Australia’s Project Compassion which raises money for those living in poverty around the world. People can also give to our schools electronic fundraising page by clicking on the following link https://lent.caritas.org.au/t/st-augustines-college-kyabrams-school-team-page

Project Compassion - Week 3

We are now approaching the third week of Lent with the Project Compassion story of Janice, a Wagilak woman and traditional dancer, who tells her family’s stories through movements handed down over generations.

Like many remote Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, Janice’s community faces a range of challenges – low employment and education, financial hardship, poorer health and lower life expectancy.

With your help, Caritas Australia supports Djilpin Arts Aboriginal Corporation, which operates a centre for traditional and contemporary Aboriginal arts and culture, providing employment and generating income for local communities.

Janice believes that Djilpin Arts’ work is essential to create opportunities for young people to stay on-country, to share intergenerational knowledge between elders and the younger generation - to promote healing and to keep culture alive.

Watch a short film about Janice’s story here.

Slavery Free Easter

Pope Francis said “every person ought to have the awareness that purchasing is always a moral – and not simply an economic – act.”

Not all chocolate is sweet. Not if a child has been forced to pick the cocoa beans – a key ingredient of chocolate. About 80% of cocoa comes from West Africa and it is estimated that almost 2 million children are in child labour in these areas. They may never go to school or taste the chocolate they help produce. Make a change in Easter 2022 and buy only slavery-free chocolate to ensure no child labour or forced labour was used in the production. Slavery-free chocolate will feature one of these certification symbols on the wrappers: FAIRTRADE, Rainforest Alliance and UTZ. It’s delicious and you can buy it at ALDI and other leading supermarkets and shops.

St Augustine’s College Prayer

God of life,

Created in your image,

We follow in the footsteps of your Son, Jesus.

We seek to know, love and serve you

as St Augustine and St Brigid did.

Jesus, our friend, inspire in each of us

an openness to being your missionary disciples.

Be with our College community as we

seek wisdom, pray for peace and work for justice.

Holy Spirit, guide us, to live with hope and courage

and to celebrate the gift of life with joy and gratitude.

We pray for the strength:     To embody kindliness

St Brigid of Kildare:                Pray for us

St Augustine of Hippo:         Pray for us
