Around the Classrooms

Foundation

Our Foundation students had a range of new experiences last week including our House Athletics Day. The students were very excited to come together with the rest of the school and all demonstrated great participation throughout the day. We are very grateful to all the families who came along and thank them for their support.

In Numeracy students have been exploring how a number can be made in different ways. They have been connecting the written number with a collection of objects. Students are using a range of games and hands on tasks to build and make connections between different representations of a number. We even introduced kids to BINGO which was a lot of fun.

We also introduced home reading, where students have begun taking decodable books and activities home each afternoon. Teachers have had some great feedback from families about how excited students are to share their new reading skills. We are very proud of them!

Geelong Advertiser 'My First Year' Foundation Photo Series

With the tremendous success of the Geelong Advertiser "My First Year" prep photo series a couple of years ago, the Geelong Advertiser is offering Geelong region schools the opportunity to be part of a souvenir lift and online gallery.  The photographer visited our school recently and the 'My First Year' edition will be published in the Geelong Advertiser on March 30.

Year 1 and 2

It has been a busy few weeks in the 1/2 building, with all students working extremely hard and making positive impacts on their learning. Students have shown they are getting into the school routines and have shown amazing resilience through lots of changes when teachers have been absent.

Content Knowledge

We are coming to the end of our focus on the Gold Rush and last week students were able to combine their new decoding skills, vocabulary knowledge and comprehension skills to put together a timeline of key events during the gold rush. Students have been reading and writing all about the impacts of the gold rush on our nation, as well as what life was like during that time.

Numeracy

This term students have been working on their number knowledge. We have explored number lines and place value using lots of hands-on activities. This week we are excited to put that knowledge into practice while working on our addition strategies.

House Athletics

The 1/2 students showed amazing teamwork and resilience during the athletics day on Friday. Not only was it a successful day due to the amazing athletic skills on display, but teachers were so proud to see students cheering on their teammates, as well as maintaining positive attitudes throughout the day. It was so great to see everyone in their house colours, and we can’t wait for more fun events with the 1/2s in the future!

Year 3 and 4

The 3/4s have been focusing on their fluency during Literacy. They have been practising reading texts aloud to a partner, recording their reading and counting how many words they read per minute. There have been 3 goals to improve fluency which is reading accurately, reading with expression and reading with fluency. Well done on the grade 3/4s on all their hard work.

Year 5 and 6

For reading in the past week the 5/6s have been working on improving their reading fluency by improving the amount of words they can read in 60 seconds. They have been filming each other read and then creating reading personal reading goals based on their observations of their own reading.

For Text Construction we have been working on sentence construction with a focus on conjunctions to create more complex sentences. In particular, we have been using ‘because’, ‘but’, and ‘so’. Also, we have been using the Single Paragraph Outline to create detailed paragraphs.

Maths- we have been exploring efficient addition and subtraction strategies.

The kids LOVED House Athletics last week as well.
