AI FOR GOOD
AI FOR GOOD HACKATHON
On Thursday this week our Like Minds class and a few students from our Year 8 STEAM elective class participated in the AI for Good Hackathon. This is part of an international challenge run by Microsoft, and was presented to our students by Gabbi from Education Changemakers. The challenge asked students to identify a real-world problem from one of five different areas, and design a solution that incorporates AI.
The final activity in the challenge was a 60s pitch to the rest of the class. We heard about ideas for facial recognition software to support people with mental health concerns, AI cutlery to support visually impaired people to eat, and an app designed to support children whose parents are going through the process of a divorce.
Congratulations to Xavier Nicholls who won the People's Choice award for best idea of the day - an app that helps keep you safe from sunburn by telling you if sunscreen has been applied effectively, and where nearby shade might be.
As well as being an opportunity to participate in an engaging activity and submit an entry to a global challenge with great prizes, the focus of this challenge was on our Enterprise Capabilities of Creativity and Teamwork – a key feature of our Like Minds program. All students are congratulated on their efforts yesterday. Students will now finalise their designs, and submit this to the global challenge. We look forward to receiving the results of this.
