What's happening in the classrooms

Junior School

We would like to welcome the rest of the students back to school, it was very quiet in the playground without you all.

In the Junior school we have been focusing on gratitude and belonging in Religious Education as the whole school returns. This is helping us to feel connected to the school, our friends and family.

The juniors have been writing procedures. This week we have been writing procedures on how to make puppets. In reading the Preps are learning to retell stories such as the Gingerbread man and Jack and the giant beanstalk. In Grade 1 and 2, they are focusing on sequencing stories and how to ask questions about a story they are reading.

In maths the Preps have been learning how to add numbers together and the Grade 1s and 2s have been learning how to tell the time.

The juniors have been investigating change in Inquiry. We have seen corn change into popcorn and water change into ice. They are learning that temperature can change these foods.

Middle School

We are thrilled to have welcomed back our students to school this week! It has been an exciting time catching up with friends and peers as well as settling into a more familiar routine. This week we began our new daily ‘Word of the Day’ learning task where students explored new and familiar vocabulary and used it to construct an interesting sentence. As we are beginning to learn about procedural texts in writing, this week we have focused on investigating adverbs which are words that describe an action. The first word we analysed was ‘slowly’. Students were taught the definition, how to spell the word and were given examples of how they might use it in a sentence. Students were also encouraged to focus on using full stops and capital letters appropriately.

Jessica from Grade 3 wrote, ‘The snail was going slowly to school, but when he arrived, it

was already Christmas holidays.’

Amira from Grade 4 wrote, ‘I ate my chips slowly because I didn’t want to finish my chips quickly.’

We look forward to supporting students to build their vocabulary and further develop their writing skills, grammar and punctuation. The students have really enjoyed this part of our Literacy learning and look forward each morning to find out what their new ‘Word of the Day’ will be. We are very proud of our students’ ability to adapt to change and for their positive attitudes and enthusiasm towards learning something new every day. Keep up the great effort everyone!

Senior School

There was lots of excitement in the senior school as the student returned to school last week. We are so happy to see everyone’s smiling faces in person again! As the students settled into the new routine we have been focussing on positive thinking and the power of the words “What if…” to try to change our thinking when things are going wrong.

In Mathematics the senior students have been developing their understanding of fractions and decimals. We have explored our knowledge through lots of different problem solving activities.

In Literacy the 5/6's have been comparing and contrasting texts, identifying similarities and differences in both fiction and non fiction texts. We have been very creative in writing, including adverbial phrases and nouns groups to make our writing more interesting. This week we began formulating our arguments for debates to be held between the year 5’s and year 6’s next week. As we are all unable to be in the same space at the moment we will be holding our debates via our Google Meets!

For Religious Education we have been focusing on gratitude and thinking about all the things in our lives that we are grateful for. The students have thought about what makes our world wonderful and have written prayers of thanks to God for many things.
