Leadership Centre

Curriculum

And just like that we are another week down! The Leadership Centre students have impressed their teachers once again with the amazing effort going into their daily slides this week.

For Math sessions last week students worked on a mini Data and Statistics Project, that saw them tally up data, create three data displays and then after analysing their data they wrote statements on what their data showed. Using physical materials or digital technologies, students began with a question and a table of options and votes. Students could choose from a range of pre-made tables or create their own. From there, students learnt from clever ‘How to’ videos made by Mr Burrill and Miss Walker to make their own ‘strip’ graph. This graph helped them for the following session as they created a pie and bar graph. After uploading pictures of their work the last session was spent analysing and making statements about what their data displays showed. Students shared their own student voice on what they enjoyed from the project and what could be improved next time. It was great to see the positive feedback and how they felt challenged during these lessons but also learnt a new way of representing data.

Monday calls for spelling in the Leadership Centre and when remote learning that is still the case! For last week’s spelling lesson, students chose from three videos to watch that reviewed the 70 Codes, a Codes spelling lesson and a Codes Rule lesson. Students were able to listen and follow along as Miss Campbell went through 10 words focusing on 10 codes. For an extra challenge, students could listen and learn about 4 out of the 8 syllable division rules and put their knowledge into practice through an activity. Keep a look out for this week’s spelling lesson!

Our Writing topic over the next few weeks is persuasive and students have begun to look at a range of ways writers use Literary Devices to engage the reader as well as include high modality words for stronger persuasion within an argument.

It was wonderful to see students be creative when writing their own metaphors and similes as well as experiment with rhetorical questions, idioms and other literary devices! This week we will be working on including these devices into longer persuasive writing pieces.

Class Zoom meetings, have been a great way to connect and share about our days, weekends, play games or dress up! We encourage all the students to continue to keep connected and to be social with their peers online outside normal school hours. We do not recommend students using online applications to connect without parental consent or without a parent being aware. We want to emphasise that The Zoom Meeting App is to be only used for classes (hosted by teachers) to connect and not for personal use. With many new apps being created similar to FaceTime we encourage families to talk about the best ways the students can keep in contact but also remain safe online.

Have a lovely week!

Reminders

  • We want to remind students of ensuring that they are being a responsible user when working online as well as messaging and speaking appropriately to others when required. This is a message that we often repeat at school but we wanted to highlight this again, particularly under the current circumstances. A good way of thinking about this is if a screenshot was taken of your message and seen by a parent or teacher would you be happy with that?
  • Remember to spend time away from using screens, particularly on weekends
  • If parents have any questions/queries we ask that you message teachers via Sentral
  • All morning Zoom meetings commence at 9am. It is very important that students are connected at this time.
  • Please ensure that your child has an appropriate working space that is away from distractions and background noise, eg. the TV or kitchen
  • Students are now 'handing in' their work through Google Classroom and must have as much of their work completed as they can and submit by 3:30
  • Camp forms and payments must be returned ASAP. Thank you to those who have already returned their forms.
