TERM THREE CURRICULUM FOCUS

Foundation Year One/Two  will be to focus on developing formative

  • hand eye coordination
  • group cooperation and working in social situations.

Students have been  learning simple games as a group with the focus being catching throwing and moving into space.

Year 3/4 have been consolidating their ball skills with a focus on

  • Basketball
  • Soccer
  • Hockey

We encourage students to be playing these sports every day and as much as possible in the yard and before school.

Year 5/6 will also be involved in developing their basketball skills with Keith Howden, who works with us as an Athletics and Basketball coach. His role is to develop the children’s skills through intensive practice.

The Victorian Roller Derby Association have been teaching 3/4 and 5/6 classes and this term.

The association chose Thornbury to begin their program. The program is funded by the government to support the promotion of Roller Derby as a sport for children.

Students are shown how to apply protective gear like elbow knee pads and helmets. The focus is to build balance and technique. Students have taken to the professional coaching and are beginning to master the basic techniques required to play games.

The Roller Derby Team are inviting us to join their club with a view to playing or making a team. The program has really challenged the students and has been worthwhile in finding new ways to be active and staying healthy in all sports.
