EXCEL Sports Program

Year 9 Mt Martha Triathlon

On Saturday 3rd March, the Year 9 EXCEL Sport class competed in the Enticerfest Triathlon at Mt Martha. The students spent 6 weeks training for the event in class time under the expert guidance of our resident Ironman Mr. Clark. The race consisted of a 150m swim, 9km bike ride and a 2km run. It was an outstanding day with the school being represented with distinction in the community by our EXCEL Sport students. Congratulations to Sam Ridgway, Zac Rowell and Alex Walker for finishing 1st, 2nd and 3rd respectively in our class for the boys, and Emily Terlicher, Alexandra Mason and Madeleine Terlicher for finishing 1st, 2nd and 3rd respectively in our class for the girls. A special thank you to Mr. Clark and Mrs. Brand for giving up their Saturday to assist and support us in this event.

Year 8 Beach Volleyball Schools Cup

The Year 8 EXCEL Sport class competed in the Beach Schools Cup at Port Melbourne Beach on Wednesday 14th March. Patterson River Secondary College entered three girls’ teams, two boys’ teams and a mixed team in the event. All teams competed in pool groups to win the right to progress to the final stages of the competition. After the preliminary rounds, one of our girls’ teams made it through to the quarter-finals, where they competed against on over confident McKinnon Secondary College. The girls beat McKinnon in straight sets to progress to the semi-finals against the eventual overall winners Maribyrnong Secondary College. We won the first set and sent a panic through the opposition. Unfortunately, we were unable to close out the match but Patterson River Secondary College represented themselves with distinction throughout the day and gave some schools a lesson in humility and teamwork. An outstanding day by the entire Year 8 class. A special mention to Mr. Jack for assisting us throughout the event.

Year 9 Excel Sport at Carrum Primary School Athletics Carnival

On Friday 16th March, the Year 9 EXCEL Sport class was invited to attend and assist at the Carrum Primary School Athletics Carnival. All of the students were divided into small groups, and then given an event to either marshal, record or measure. It was a fantastic opportunity for our students to show case our program in the community and demonstrate the students’ ability to coordinate and supervise a sporting event.

I was extremely proud of the maturity and responsibility displayed by the students throughout the day. The Carrum Primary School community was highly complimentary of our program and grateful for the assistance. Well done Year 9s.

Touch Football Championships

On Tuesday 20th March, the Year 7 and Year 9 EXCEL Sport students competed in the Year 7 and Under 15 Girls and Boys Touch Football Championships at Greaves Reserve, Dandenong. Patterson River Secondary College entered three girls teams and three boys teams in this event. After the preliminary rounds, our Boys and Girls Under 15 teams played in the finals series. The boys team played in two finals and finished 4th for the day, competing against much bigger and experienced opposition but never giving up. Our girls team played in the grand final against Elwood who were the previous winners of the event. Unfortunately, we were unable to come away with the win, but the experience was invaluable against an experienced and well-drilled opposition. Thank you to Mr. Hayes and Ms. Robbins for assisting and supporting us throughout the day.
