Year 8 Boys Volleyball

On Wednesday 21/03 6 schools competed at the Year 8 Boys Volleyball competition at the Patterson River Secondary College Stadium. Over 7 rounds each shool played against each other. While our students only recorded one win for the day, they can be commended on playing every point as hard as they could.

Oska McGuinness, Ethan Mobbs, Brock Gillson, Seth Furborough, Declan Rogers, Mitch Rosicka, Jamie Clark and Cooper Forsyth.

Year 8 Tennis

On March 21st, ten Year 8 students represented Patterson River Secondary College in the Interschool Competition for Tennis. Beautifully dressed in their sports uniforms, these students tentatively and bravely faced more experienced opposition in gale force winds on the courts at EMC.

Haydyn Skinner played exceptionally well and his singles scores did not truly reflect the intensity of the match.  The girls doubles also proved to be very good tennis.

Although we did not win the round, we came close to defeating our historical rivals. On the day, all of the following students should be proud of their sporting achievements and the manner in which they represented the College.

Boys:  Nirav Nand, Haydn Skinner, Oliver Smith, Brooklyn Thornell-Brink and Luke Wilson.

Girls: Claire Boyle, Shekinah Lennon, Awen Lloyd, Jahnavi Mehta and Charlotte O'Connor.

Year 7 Surf Lifesaving

Our Year 7 surf lifesaving class has wrapped up for the term and we were so blessed with wonderful weather making the experience that much more enjoyable.

In the last lesson, students were introduced to the CPR side of surf lifesaving.  Learning about DRSABCD and what to do in an emergency situation, really struck a chord with the students, with a lot of really great questions being asked.  The class was also fortunate enough have a demonstration of the defibrillation equipment.  Clearly, it was only a demonstration performed on mannequins,  but it was really interesting to follow the instructions given by the defib machine and actually place the electrical sticky pads onto a ‘patient’.

We had a magnificent experience with Campbell and Dawn from the Bonbeach Lifesaving Club and we thank them for their expertise, time and dedication to teaching and introducing our students to Lifesaving.

Year 8 Girls Volleyball

On Wednesday 21st March, we had 2 Year 8 Girls Volleyball teams head out to Frankston High School for our Term 1 Interschool Sport Competition.

With a really busy schedule, 5 games each, the girls got stuck into it.  They took a little while to adapt to the height of the net and the depth of the court but once they got their eye in, they were wonderful.

Their persistence was great, pushing a lot of games to a third set which was impressive.  They were constantly encouraging each other and suggesting ways in which they could improve each other’s technique.  It was a great day out with pleasing results, ending with our ‘A’ team placing 3rd on the day and our ‘B’ team placing 6th.

It was a real pleasure taking the girls out for the day and they represented the college well.

The members of the team should be congratulated on their efforts. Well done girls.

Charlotte Barnes, Indy Boyd, Charli Bulstrode, Amy Defina, Ruby Griffith Hayes, Olivia Love, Olivia Pera, Talzyn Roberts, Mikayla Sinclair, Shekinah Upkett,  Stephanie Valdecantos, Paige Ramsey and Abby Kapp.

Year 7 Tennis

On Monday the 26th of March, the Year 7 Interschool Tennis competition was held at Elizabeth Murdoch Secondary College. Patterson River competed against Frankston High School, McClelland Secondary and Elizabeth Murdoch College.  Congratulations to the boys team for achieving second place and to the girls team for achieving third place overall.

The boys team consisted of: Lochlan O’Shannessy, Jordan Launder, Korey Brenner Cohen and Jowen Louis-Smith and the girls team consisted of Anika Coghill, Jordyn McLean, Cassandra Neilson and Zoya Stott (absent).

Despite a freezing cold and wet day, the students had a fun day competing. All students participated to the best of their ability, were encouraging of each other and were extremely respectful to their competitors.  Well done!

Year 8 Boys Baseball

The Year 8 Boys had been out training for 3 weeks and learnt the basics of the positions, hitting the ball and base running. They were ready to get out and play.

There was a core group that formed the base of the team led by Luke Hill. On the day, Luke took on the leadership and very tough role of playing as Catcher.

The first game was very close and we started in the field with a first pitch hit to centre field straight into the waiting glove of Brodie Boyd. The innings was then brought to a close with

Elijah Petricevich teaming up with first time pitcher, Solomone Fonua to get the last base runner. The scores were level after 2 innings and a wild pitch saw the final run scored for EMC.

Even though we went down by a run, the team looked like a team and played some quality baseball. Caleb Freshwater and Finn Marshall teamed up very well in the crucial spots of short stop and second base and accounted for 7 of the 9 outs we had for the game.

The games continued to be close with another 1 run loss to McClelland College. Luke took over the pitching duties and did very well. Strong support from the outfield led by Brodie Boyd at Centre Field, with Jay Costa, Kalinos Gay and  Khane Stephenson patrolling the outfield positions.

Jack Corvan O'Leary, Harry Jolly and Ethan Brown shared some infield positions and made some plays that either stopped runners at a base or made the outs.

At the start of the day the team was wary of playing against the strong Frankston HS team that beat Patterson River by 20 runs last year in Year 7 sport.  I pointed out the knowledge they had built as a group about the game in defence, getting runners out, and offence, hitting the ball.

Nearly all players got a hit on the day with some solid contact either beating the field or forcing the infield to make a solid play to get them out.

Well done to the team for getting out on the diamond and having a go. They all did their bit on a very difficult day in the wind at Frankston Baseball Club. Special thanks to Mr Cashmore for taking the team for the last 3 games. The students all appreciated your efforts.

By the way, in the game against Frankston High School we did go down, but only by 5 runs. A 15 run improvement.

Looking forward to next year.

Mr John McLoughlin

Year 8 Girls Cricket

The Year 8 Girls Cricket team competed in the Northern Peninsula District Division round robin tournament on Wednesday 21st March. The team played a Super 8s format throughout the day and after the preliminary rounds, Patterson River Secondary College was undefeated. We played the grand final against Mt Erin and despite a few finals nerves the team finished with the Pennant as the District winners. A fantastic effort by the girls who were admirably lead by our State cricketer Rhys McKenna. The team will now progress to the next round in Term 4. Well done girls.

Year 7 Cricket

On Monday 26 March, two boys and one girls team went to Ballam Park to represent Patterson River  in the Year 7 Interschool cricket competition. Playing the Super 8’s rules format run by Cricket Victoria meant that all students were able to get a bowl and bat in each game. The day was a typical Melbourne day with all seasons being on show throughout the games.

Results:

Boys B Team 2nd
