Debating

The inaugural Junior

School Debating Challenge was held in the first weeks of term four and drew many a new debater along with those more experienced. The event was well orchestrated as the legacy of our current Year 12 squad, whose adjudication was informative, humorous, encouraging and second to none.

Each homeroom in the junior school was challenged to enter a representative team, and the stage was set for a week of heated competition to be the winners of the inaugural challenge. With a slab of Coke for the winning homeroom and trips to the movies up for grabs, the stakes were high and the competition was fierce!

Over the challenge, topics debated included: “That violent video games make violent people”, “That the AFL Grand Final Eve public holiday was a waste of time”, “That St Bede’s College should be co-ed” and “That every weekend should be a three day weekend”. From the humorous to the socially topical, there was something for everyone, with great support from each homeroom for the teams who debated.

Congratulations goes to both Homeroom 8.4 and Homeroom 7.2 who competed against each other in the Grand Final. A tight score line and some insightful adjudicating saw the mighty 7.2 Homeroom take out the title for 2015, ably supported by their proud Homeroom teacher,

Mrs. Viv Ditcham.

Thank you to the Year level Coordinators, Ms. Carmel Moloney and Mr James Honan for their assistance in running the competition and especially to the Year 12 team whose legacy this is, and who adjudicated so impressively: Kent Bennett, Nelson McKiggan, Matthew Cassar, Connor Johnston, Darragh Tate, Joseph Russo, Robert Evans. They were ably supported in adjudicating by John Haycroft, Nicholas Pudney and David Antolos from Year 11.
