2015 STATE ATHLETICS

STATE ATHLETICS TITILES
On Wednesday 21 October nine students represented Lilydale High School at the SSV State Athletics Titles.
The first competitor of the day was Lee Taylor in the Girls 2000m Steeplechase. Lee found the conditions difficult falling off the pack early in the race. Lee finished the race in 10th position.
Our Under 13 girls performed extremely well on the day after having taken out first place in all distances from 100m to 1500m at the Eastern Metropolitan Region competition. Chelsea Thompson was in the 100m and 200m and performed extremely well. Given her limited preparation, she took home bronze in the 100m and finished a close 4th in the 200m.
Georgia Laven took out 1st in the 400m and 800m. Georgia was dominant in both of her races winning both by large margins. Georgia performed particularly well in the 800m, only missing the 23 year old record by 0.04 of a second.
Ruby Dixon took part in the 1500m race. Maintaining a strong position at the front of the race and holding down second place for the majority of the race, Ruby had a strong finish, but was unable to catch first place. Ruby took home the silver medal in a very fast time.
Tyler competed in all throwing events in the Under 15 Boys section. He struggled to find his rhythm in Shot Put and Javelin, finishing 5th and 8th respectively. He was more successful in his pet event, Discuss, finishing 3rd after throwing just short of his PB. One of the boys Tyler was competing against, threw a new state record which was longer than the tape measure they had at the event. Tyler did very well to take home 3rd place.
James Laven ran in the Under 15 Boys 1500m late in the day in very hot and windy conditions. He ran with the front pack for the first two laps, which was run at a solid pace, but was unable to go with the leaders in the last lap as the pace increased. James finished the race in 5th position in a very fast time.
Lily Thompson ran in the Under 15 Girls 1500m in the same difficult conditions as James. Lily found the heat difficult to deal with and was unable to maintain her early position at the front of the race, finishing in 7th position.
Molly Dixon and Adam Johnson both finished 3rd in their respective Under 17 800m races. Molly got a good start in her race, running in the front pack for the first lap. As the field spread out down the back straight, Molly positioned herself well and held off a late challenge to take home the bronze medal. Adam’s race was run at a blistering pace, with the field spread out from the beginning.
Adam ran his race to his plan, coming through the first lap in fourth position. He started his sprint at the 200m mark, taking one position and almost catching third place on the line. This was a fantastic result for his first appearance at the state finals.
