Japanese

こんにちは!Hello!

Did you know that in Japan it is popular to send a New Year card? These New Year cards are called 'Nengajo'. Room 10 have been preparing their Nengajo cards to send to some pen pals in Japan. These cards usually have a picture of the zodiac animal for the year on them. Can you tell which animal is next year?

Meanwhile students from Year 6/7 have been starting their end of year celebrations early with a visit to Ginza Japanese Restaurant. We were lucky enough to enjoy our meal in a traditional Japanese setting and the students certainly got into the swing of things using their Japanese language to earn prizes along the way!

We began by trying miso soup and then each of us were given an obento (Japanese style lunch box) that was filled with rice, teriyaki chicken, gyoza, tempura prawns and vegetables. We finished the meal off with some green tea ice-cream. It’s always a fun night and a great way to finish the year 😊

Sports Day

I’d like to begin by thanking every student, parent, volunteer and all staff who contributed to a very successful Sports Day. These kinds of days can not be run without parent support so I thank you for your contributions, whether that was cooking a BBQ or simply supporting your child/ren. Thank you. I was extremely pleased with how the day was executed and it was awesome to watch a sea of colour stream across West Beach Primary at the end of the day. We got lucky with the weather and didn’t have to cancel any of the events which was extremely pleasing.

Thank you to everyone who has helped fundraise and donated money to the pool shade area. Through the Colour Run online fundraising we have raised over $2000 which is an incredible effort. Children that have online fundraising profiles must order their prizes by the 15thof November via the school fun run website. Orders will not be accepted after this date. More information will be sent out on Skoolbag in the coming days.

Congratulations to Yakandi (Green) who finished the day with the most amount of points, winning our 2019 Sports Day. I would also like to take some time recognise the incredible work of our 2019 House Captains. Their hard work creating house chants, creating and implanting a whole school health hustle and organising their houses before and on Sports Day. It is not an easy thing to stand up in front of 300+ students/staff and speak so confidently. Congratulations on all of your efforts and your leadership. It was a pleasure to work with you.

Once again, thank you to students, staff, and parents who helped with the smooth running of an excellent Sports Day.

Kind regards,

Science News

In Science over the last few weeks, students have been working hard to develop their understanding of the concepts based on chemical sciences.

In Rooms 1-6, students have looked at the properties of materials. They have learnt about the difference between an object and a material and they have been able to describe the properties of materials such as metal being shiny and hard. They have investigated a range of materials and objects and categorised them.

In Rooms 7-9, students did an experiment on thermal conductivity. They learnt that ice melts faster on metal than it does on plastic because metal is a good conductor of heat.

In Rooms 10 and 12, students have been learning about gases and liquids. They learnt that gas takes up space in a container by doing an interesting experiment where they put a tissue in a cup and submerged the cup into water, upside-down. They found that the tissue remained dry, hence proving that air took up space in the cup.

Rooms 11 and 14 did their final presentations on their moon colonisation unit. They were absolutely fantastic and were clearly very proud of their efforts and achievements. They learnt a lot about the moon including how to have breathable air, how to build a shelter, how to grow food and how to recycle waste. Their models were well-constructed and demonstrated a deep learning into this topic.

Garden News

What a wonderful morning Room 4 had working with the Bunnings Team, Jo and Craig Knott (Eve's parents Rm 14) and Sarah (Isla's mum Rm 7).

When you get a chance take a look at our veggies. They are flourishing!!

A mighty big Thank You to our terrific parent helpers.

Lego Masters Competition

From weeks 2 to 5 during lunchtimes in the library we have been running our Lego Masters Competition. An average of 40 kids each week from all year levels have joined in the fun.

Each week we had a different challenge. Our first challenge was for teams to build a copy of an image given to them of a castle or a ship. The second challenge was for group members to each build their own part of a creation which then came together at the end. The third challenge was for teams to create anything they wanted but they had to include a special piece – a car base. The final challenge saw each group given a box of Lego pieces. They then had to build their creation using only these pieces.

We would like to say thank you to everyone who participated. It was so fun!

Student Voice

We have had an interesting week with student voice. Our school have been actively using a special Student Ambassador Wellbeing tool kit called Voice It. This toolkit includes a range of cards that have many questions on them that guide students to solve problems and design and plan a project they feel is important to them. We were lucky enough to have a professional filming crew come to our school to film our students talking about this tool kit and how it has benefitted them. Once this film is completed, it will be shown at the Wellbeing Leaders Conference in 2020 and will also be a resource available for educators across South Australia.

The students really enjoyed being apart of this process as they felt valued and were able to express their opinions, demonstrating that students can make a big difference in a school setting.

In WOW, students will be attending a Youth Forum where they will go on a bus tour and visit a variety of school sites to see how they are meeting their sustainability goals.  The WOW students will have a chance to present at the forum to a range of students from other schools. They are very much looking forward to this opportunity.
