Japanese

こんにちは,

Konnichiwa

Did you know that the R-2 students experienced our own version of the popular Japanese pass time known as Hanami (Cherry Blossom Viewing)?

We held our own Hanami Picnic at school to celebrate the blooming of our very own blossom trees. The students came dressed up for the special occasion and brought their lunch in a traditional Japanese Obento Box.

There were some amazing works of art in those lunch boxes! A big thank you to all of the parents who helped make our day such a special occasion :)

I would also like to take this opportunity to say a big thank you and farewell to Sachiko Sensei who will be moving to her next school, Roma Mitchell High School, in Term 4. The students have enjoyed having Sachiko in some of their lessons and appreciate the extra activities she has done with them.

All the best at your new school Sachiko Sensei. We hope you can come back to visit!

Sports Day

It was disappointing to see Sports Day canceled last Friday, even more so with not a drop of rain until after 3:20pm!! Sports Day will now be held on Friday 25th October, Week 2, Term 4. I hope you can all make it! Please find attached the Sports Day Program.

Sport News

On Tuesday, Rooms 10 and 12 were lucky enough to participate in an AFL 9's clinic run by Flinders University students at West Beach Primary School. These classes will travel to Flinders University next term to participate in a carnival against other schools. It is important that schools are willing to participate in these carnivals as it is a great learning experience for Education students. I did it when I was a students at Flinders and it is a great day.

Lunchtime Activities in the Library

On Tuesday and Friday lunchtimes we offer activities for students in the library. This includes craft, games, Lego and (this term) knitting.

These activities provide a fun environment for children to connect, cooperate and communicate whilst expressing their creativity, making new friends and learning new skills.

We are grateful to Raelene, Judy and Kate who volunteer their time to help with this. You may have noticed the “yarn-bombing” on one of our trees. Stay tuned for more colourful creations once the knitting classes conclude at the end of the term.

Room 2

Room 2 loves learning! We have learnt so many things this term.

We learnt how to write a scientific report about dinosaurs. With Mrs Wright we researched the Dromornis, using specific headings and scientific words. Then with Mrs Bleby we ‘share penned’ a report. We hope you enjoy reading about the Australian dinosaur.

Dromornis

Classification

The scientific name for the Dromornis is ‘Dromornis Stir Toni’.

It was like a bird. The Dromornis is related to the emu and cassowary. Its’ bones were only found in Australia. It became extinct 15 million years ago.

Appearance

The body looked like an emu, but it was bigger. The Dromornis had a long strong beak that it used to eat. It had long black feathers on its body.

The Dromornis had big thick long legs that it used to walk on.

It was 3 metres tall which is as tall as our classroom roof.

It was 3 metres long which is as long as from the door to our dinosaur pictures.

It was 650 kg which is as heavy as 11 Mrs Bleby’s.

Behaviour

The Dromornis couldn’t fly. It ate plants, this means it was a herbivore. When it hunted it hunted on the forest floor.

In Maths we have been learning about our number system by playing the ‘Bankers Game’.

We rolled a dice and put out that many pop sticks under the units column, then we rolled the dice lots of times adding the pop sticks. Mrs Unit never lets there be more than 10 pop sticks in her column, so then we have to bundle them up into groups of 10 and move the pop sticks to Mr Ten. Mr Ten does not like more than 10 bundles of 10 in his column so we have to bundle them up and move them to Mrs Hundred. This is the beginning of learning about our Base 10 number system. The next step is to use MAB blocks for this exchanging. The class loved the challenge and everyone was very enthusiastic, especially when they got to 100! It has been so much fun.
