Year 8 Camp Coolamatong
By Ben White (Year 8 Team Leader)
As our Year 8 students climbed aboard the buses, the excitement for yet another camp began to build. Coolamatong was our destination with this year’s theme: The Call to Adventure! Camp staff greeted us on our arrival at Coola and we quickly prepared our groups for their first activities.
One of the major activities on Year 8 Camp is a 10km hike; this began with a boat trip taking us to the start of our two night journey on 90 Mile beach. Cooking on trangias, setting up tents and carrying packs provided a challenge as we explored the beautiful landscapes; both the ocean and the lakes of Paynesville.
At night the sounds of waves crashing and wondrous starry nights gave way to deep discussion, outdoor fun and toasted s'mores around a warm, crackling campfire. Other activities consisted of canoeing, bike riding, camp cooking, initiatives and night walks.
We had mostly clear skies for the duration of our camp, enabling full day trips on both bikes and canoes as students overcame fears, broke through mental barriers and challenged themselves physically to push through adversity. This gave way to the purpose of the camp - a call to adventure; to challenge and grow our students.
One of the highlights of this years camp was seeing the wildlife. We even got up-close and personal with koalas on Raymond Island! We also saw emus and donkeys during our bike ride, but it wouldn't have been a true Coola Camp without the odd Jellyfish or two being thrown at each other!
We rolled back to BHCS on Friday exhausted yet fulfilled after a long week of adventure.
House Athletics - Middle & Senior
By Steve Kelly (Secondary Sports Co-ordinator)
Well done to all those who competed in any of the events at Athletics - there were some excellent results and some of you will get the chance to represent BHCS at the CSEN Eastern Region Athletics Championships in Term 3.
It was great to see so many students cheering, dressing up in team colours and generally enjoying one another's company in a different setting to usual. A big thanks to all of the staff and parents who helped in various ways throughout the day, the event could not run without you!
