Easter Cooking
During Term 1, the Year 9 Food Technology class has focused on Multicultural Cuisine. Students have been able to cook main meals and desserts from a variety of countries and cultures. As part of our Australian studies, students investigated commemorative baking and the history of the ANZAC biscuit. For our final week of cooking, students continued this idea of traditional baking with some Easter treats. Students made Chocolate Mousse Eggs, which involved piping chocolate mousse into a hollow Easter egg. In addition, students made Chocolate Hot Cross Buns. It's important to remember where these traditions come from, with eggs representing new life, and the cross on buns to remind us of God's love.

CSSN Music Day
This week, I had the privilege of taking the first BHCS team to the CSSN Music Day at Hillcrest Christian College. Sebastian C (Year 7), Noah C (Year 9) and Zoe H (Year 10) had a great day rehearsing in small groups and then coming together with about two hundred other student musicians to play some absolutely beautiful music in a concert after lunch. It was a wonderful opportunity to get together with other musically-inclined students and work together on a common task. The music component of the CSSN competition has a bright future and I'm looking forward to taking many more students to these well-run events.

ROAR Leadership Team
Earlier this year, the Year 10 students had an opportunity to be nominated to be a part of a new and exciting relationship with the Yarra Ranges Council’s youth team. From those who were nominated, seven students were selected to take part in a ROAR Leadership program, which is designed to equip young people with leadership and personal skills, enabling them to deliver community projects.
I am very proud to announce our ROAR Leadership team for Year 10, in 2016 are: Emily J, Emma G, Lily J, Grace K, Miah S, Brad T and Nicholas F.
Earlier this term the students attended a three day active leadership camp with students from other schools and a team of professional staff from the Yarra Ranges Youth Services. Here the students connected as a team, were taught vital skills about how to be a leader and began brainstorming options for BHCS's community development project to be run by the students and financially supported by the Council.
Continuing into Term 2, the Year 10 ROAR leadership team will continue to meet weekly with their mentor from the Yarra Council and BHCS staff to plan and work on their community project within the school, at the same time building on their personal and team skills.
Projects in previous years have included facilitating leadership activities in a feeder primary school, improving the physical amenity of a section of a school through artwork, designing a community calendar and creating a welcoming mural promoting respect through a variety of languages.
The team have many exciting ideas and possibilities to plan and I look forward to sharing with you the progress next term. So stay tuned for more information!
