Classroom News - Year 2

Miss Simpson, Mrs Phelps and Mrs Cain

Year 2 has been working very hard in our new learning space and we are getting used to new routines and learning opportunities. This week we have welcomed Mrs Turner to our classroom each day. Mrs Turner is an Educational Assistant and she is helping us to support every learner in many ways.

In Religion, we are continuing to learn about how we can have the best relationships with God, our family, our friends and our community. This week we have been looking more closely at The Commandments and The Beatitudes. We have acted out some conflict resolution situations and we have role played some dilemmas. Last week we made a prayer card for a friend to highlight our gifts from God. Listening to Make Me A Channel of Your Peace has been enjoyable this week.

George’s Marvellous Medicine by Roald Dahl is still keeping us busy learning fantastic new vocabulary. After reading each day we look at the meaning of exciting words such as colossal and idle. Some other writing techniques we are learning about from Roald Dahl are synonyms, alliteration and onomatopoeia. This Friday we will be writing our last Cold Write for the year.

The split strategy for addition is tricky but this week we have all been practicing further in Maths. We have learned about money and the value of our Australian coins and notes. Some learners even practiced calculating change. We have loved all the hands on activities in Maths and today we even did a scavenger hunt using QR codes!

People travel to different places for different reasons. Sometimes travel can be difficult. Especially during a pandemic. In Geography, we have been exploring and wondering about People and Places.

Last week St Mary’s took part in Loud Shirt Day. We have had lots of discussion in Year 2 about the Meaning behind the day and thinking of ways we can make it easy for people with low hearing to be included in the things we do.
