Grade 5 & 6 venture out
On the 20/8/2019 the year 5’s and 6’s went to see the movie ‘2040’. We walked to Laverton station then caught the train to Yarraville. Finally, it was time to go and watch the movie ‘2040’. The documentary explained our problems in the world and how we can fix them, without making more. First, the filmmaker (Damon) went to all these different countries and asked kids ‘what they want the future to be like?’. Some kids said, 'I want meat to grow on a tree so we don’t have to kill animals for their meat’. Others said, ‘I want deforestation to stop’. Then one kid said, ‘I want everyone to be happy’.
The documentary also explained what the conditions of the environment are now in 2019 and what it could be in 2040 and how it could be better. For example, the use of driverless electric cars will help reduce road rage, crashes and accidents. Another example, was the Solarpanel grid, that uses renewable energy to create electricity, also stopping people from paying electricity taxes, that go to the government. Damon also said that our whole planet is based on carbon so he recommended to use carbon neutral, which he used. Carbon neutral is when people can go on something that gives off carbon but plant trees for how much carbon you used so you can reduce your carbon footprint. The documentary was inspiring and proved that there is hope and we can make a change. I recommend it to children 13 and over. It’s also out on DVD and Blu-ray.

'Lift a Line'
In Grade 1, we have been learning to use powerful words to make our writing more interesting. We have been reading lots of books and using the strategy called 'Lift a Line', we have lifted interesting words out of the book, and added them to our word wall. This week we wrote a Show Don't Tell paragraph where we had to use powerful words to describe an animal, without telling what the animal is. Can you guess what our animals are?
The huge animal can hop further than a rabbit. It's a marsupial. In the wild, it eats grass. At the zoo, it eats fruit. A baby is called a Joey. Did you know that this animal can hop across the classroom in 2 hops? - Lotus (1B)
I am wild. I live in the dog family. I am like a grey wolf, but I am not a grey wolf. I don't like to be hunted. Sometimes I sniff for dead animals. I have dark spots and sharp teeth. I chew my prey. - Odellon (1C)
I like to beat my chest and I liked to make it sound loud. I eat fruit and vegetables to make me strong. I sleep in large trees. Did you know that I can swing on trees? - Max (1A)

Awesome Anglesea Adventures
This week the Year 4s went to Camp Wilkin in Anglesea. We had so much fun participating in rotational activities, including a night walk, bush cooking, archery, flying fox, bike riding and other great stuff. We had a go at new experiences and enjoyed each other’s company. Thank you to our teachers for organising an amazing Camp for us.
Donations of unwanted stationery
At the end of every school year, children come home with full pencil cases. Recently, Minnie Vinnies decided to make use of any unwanted stationery, by giving it to less fortunate children in Australia. As part of this fundraiser, Minnie Vinnies would like to collect stationery that QoP children might not need at home or at school. Stationery could include pencils, pens, textas, erasers, rulers, sharpeners, etc. All stationery must be in good condition for other children to use. Children can deliver stationery to their classroom until the end of Term 3. When Minnie Vinnies have collected all stationery, it will be packaged, and sent to Mary MacKillop foundation schools in the Northern Territory for other disadvantaged children to use. Thank you for your support.

Did you know...
We will be celebrating Book Week on Wednesday 28 August. The theme this year is "Reading is my Secret Power" so we would like the children to dress up as a super hero. Children will be participating in activities in their classrooms related to Book Week. If your child does not have a super hero costume, then a simple mask could be made and a piece of fabric attached to their back for a cape.

Please meet in the Hall foyer (the Library has been relocated in preparation for new building works). Every Thursday during school terms, from 9:00am. Come along for some stories, singing and fun activities with Mrs Favata.
A message from the Office
To avoid disruption to classrooms, if children need to be collected early they should be picked up at the lunch break (at 1:30pm Monday or 1:40pm Tuesday-Friday). It is also very disruptive for classes and the office to be passing on messages to children in the afternoons and interrupting sessions with phone calls to classes and announcements over the PA system. It would be appreciated if these interruptions could be kept to a minimum.
Change of clothes
Parents of younger students: could you please ensure their school bags are stocked with a change of uniform and underwear (including socks) in case of accidents. It may be this cold weather, but we seem to have quite a few children being 'caught out' lately!
Canteen
Can you spare time to help Antoinette in the canteen? See attached request form with details. All volunteers must have a current Working with Children Check registered with the school office. Approximate times 10am - 2pm. Please contact the school office if you are unable to help out on your rostered day. To volunteer, please fill out the following form and return to the school office.
The current canteen menu is attached below.

CLICK HERE to read the Uniform Policy or refer to the STUDENT HAND, BOOK 2019.
Early Arrival & Supervision
Parents are strongly encouraged to ensure their child is at school in plenty of time to begin class at 8:50am. Our aim is to have all children arrive between 8:30 am and 8:45 am. It is very inconvenient for children to be arriving at the classroom after the bell. Yard Duty supervision of children begins at 8:30am between the hall and the new Admin Buildingl is opened. For their own safety, children are not permitted on the school grounds unsupervised before 8:30am. If parents wish to leave children at school earlier than 8:30am, children must be registered and booked into the Before School Care program. This service is provided by OSHclub. Further information can be found by calling OSHclub head office 8564 9000 or at www.oshclub.com.au
Only children attending Before School Care should enter the school via the Before School Care door (behind the Office).
