Year 12 Graduation

A message from the House Leaders

Dear Year 12’s

I wish you all every success for your future endeavours. Remember to define your own success, work hard, keep going when things get tough and stop to enjoy the abundant beauty this world

has to offer.

God Bless,

Ms Sue Keel, Aquila House Leader

Farewell to the Delphinus Year 12s.

It is sad to see you go after working with you all for the past six years. It was also great that you finished up your final year as members of the Champion House as there were so many of you who contributed to the win. I wish you all the best for the future, I hope all of your hopes and dreams come true.

Ms Judy Bishop, Delphinus House Leader

A message to the Year 12s!

To the class of 2019, I want to leave you with a few quotes as you embark on this next chapter in your journey. I hope they provide you with a source of inspiration when you need them. "Decide that you want it, more than you are afraid of it"- life is about taking a chance on yourself and chasing your dreams. Lastly,"if cauliflower can become pizza, you my friends can become anything!" Dream big, work hard and remember to always be kind.

Ms Ash Holly, Leonis House Leader

Hopefully your six years at St John’s has prepared you to face the challenges ahead in your lives. Know that there is something inside you that is greater than any obstacle that you may face. Think big thoughts and be optimistic in whatever you do.

All the very best for your futures. Grab life with both hands and make the most of it.

Ms Marina Kintzel, Pheonix House Leader

I along with all Learning Mentors and students of Columba House wish all Year 12 students in Columba best wishes for their lives after St Johns. May they achieve all they aspire to.

Good luck in your exams. We will miss you!

Ms Sonia McNally, Columba House Leader

Heroic History

In Ms Towns' Year 8 History class, the students have recently been learning about life in Mesoamerica before the Spanish invaded. They tried playing one of their ball games where you lost points if it bounced more than once on your side of the court or if it hit your wall. They played this game with balls of solid rubber and it could only be hit with your knees, hips or bottom.

"It was hard at first but by the end we had a couple of rallies."

St. John’s Stella Awards

Rewarding Positive Student Achievement

The St. John’s Stella Awards System links to our College Motto

"Virtus In Astra Tendit" which translates to ‘Courage Strives for the Stars’.

The word Stella is Latin for Star. It is a means of recognising

students who are exemplars of courage, courtesy and achievement

in the following areas of the College:

Academic Leadership

Leadership in Sports

Community Service

Cultural Endeavour

Students have the opportunity to participate in the above areas every year and throughout their six years of secondary schooling at St John’s through SIS events, School Leadership, School Performances, School House Events and Primary School Visits to name just a few examples. When students show a high level of consistent effort and participation, recognition is made by a teacher by submitting a Stella Award through SEQTA. These Awards, once approved, will be visible through SEQTA Learn/Engage in the Pastoral Care Details of the dashboard during the first few weeks of each term.  It is a way of communicating positive achievements to students and families. Stella Award Certificates are also printed and distributed by House Leaders and Learning Mentors during House Assemblies.

Students can also receive Stella Star Badges by achieving the following number of awards and these are usually handed out to students during College Assemblies. The criteria for these coloured badges are as follows:

BRONZE STAR Badge: Six Stella Awards in any category

SILVER STAR Badge: 10 Stella Awards in at least three categories

GOLD STAR Badge: 16 Stella Awards covering all four categories

DIAMOND STAR Badge: 22 Stella Awards covering all four categories

Grand Final SIS Debating

On 10 October the Junior SIS Debating team went with their coach Ms. Towns to the SIS Debating Grand Final held at Berwick Grammar School in Officer. There they debated Woodleigh College on the topic of "Current Affairs should be taught instead of History."

In a difficult competition we managed to rebut their arguments and successfully put forward our case, leading to us winning the competition. This is the first time in over a decade that the Grand Final has been won by one of our Debating teams.

The Junior Debating team was comprised of Hannah Fagan, Tristan Longmuir, Angelo Mijares, Kimberley Suson and Jeovine Suleiman.

All of them performed well throughout the competition, contributing ideas and supporting each other.

I really enjoyed being third speaker and having the chance to go into the grand finals!

Kimberley Suson, Student

I really enjoyed the experience and overall the stress and nerves. It was the greatest experience of my school life!

Jeovine Suleiman, Student

I am so proud of all my team.

Hannah Fagan, Student

Alumni Gathering

Last Thursday we had our yearly Alumni gathering for 2019.

All St John’s graduates are invited for an informal get together, perhaps sharing stories, past and present.

Our VET Hospitality students created the atmosphere in the restaurant and bar, and provide outstanding service, as always. Help and some real-life skills were provided by our charismatic 2018 VET Hospitality students, at the same time mentoring our current VET Hospitality students.

This evening also provides an opportunity for the Kitchen Operation students to showcase what they have learned throughout the year. In this case, it was variety of canapés and sweet treats, all produced in the Graduates’ kitchen.

The evening was concluded with freshly made coffee and sweets.

I thank all those who attended and would love to see them back next year, either at the Alumni evening or through a table booked in the restaurant in 2020.

Kees Vanderlaan, Hospitality and Food Technology Leader
