Year 1 Science Incursion - Wild Weather

On Monday (2 March), the Year One students enjoyed a Wild Weather Science incursion to support their 'How the World Works' Unit of Inquiry, exploring the Central Idea 'The weather affects our lives and the environment'. The students had a wonderful time exploring and experimenting with the following activities:

  • Comparing the steam produced by boiling water to the formation of a cloud.
  • Observing a simulation of rain forming and falling.
  • Erupting snow polymer and exploring its texture and properties.
  • Making a simple UV detector to keep.
  • Observing a simulation of a tornado.

Year 1 Weather Presentation

Yesterday (11 March), the Year One students were lucky enough to have Agnes Lane talk to them about the weather and how it impacts our lives. Agnes leads the Observing Strategy team in the Data Program at the Bureau of Meteorology and as a STEM Ambassador in the Bureau, she has a particular interest in outreach activities that promote STEM in schools.

Agnes discussed how weather affects what we do such as our activities, jobs and food. She talked out how they gather the information about weather at the Bureau of Meteorology and the instruments they use. The Year One students learnt a lot and really enjoyed the presentation!

Agnes is also our CSIRO Professional in Schools partner. We are always interested in meeting up with professionals who would like to work with our students.
