Physical Education

It has been an exciting start to the year within Health and Physical Education, with many exciting events either upcoming or underway. We started the year off with our six-day intensive swimming program at Swim World, with the Year 4-6 students completing their six days this week and Prep – Year 3 starting in Week 5. We have our whole school Twilight Sports coming up in Week 10, which is always a highlight for our school community. The students in Years 4-6 will participate in the intra-school Athletics Day which leads to the inter-school competition later in the term, as well as the Syndal District Summer Sport Round Robin for all Year 6 learners.

Prep

We have started the term off by learning how to be safe and respectful in Physical Education. Students are developing their knowledge of PE expectations and are understanding how to move confidently and responsibly in a given space. The learning that will take place allows each student to improve their ability to complete movement patterns while developing their spatial awareness, making sure they are mindful of their surroundings when moving within defined playing areas. By the end of the term students will be learning the correct technique to throw and catch a ball and will have multiple opportunities through throwing and catching tasks to practice and develop these new skills.

Year 1 & 2

This term, students are showing their understanding of spatial awareness and being mindful of others around them when practising basic movement skills. Students' spatial awareness is developed through moving and quick thinking whilst taking part in a variety of tagging/evading games. Students will also develop their hand-eye coordination through a range of learning tasks to develop the fundamental motor skills of catching and throwing.

Year 3 and 4

This term, we are introducing students to the techniques required to perform the athletics events of shot, discus, long jump, triple jump and high jump. Students will practise these events and gain a deeper understanding of the rules and key components required to successfully perform each skill. Students will then focus on throwing and catching, developing these fundamental motor skills through a variety of learning tasks and game situations.

Year 5 and 6

This term, students begin by practising and developing their skills of different athletics events in preparation for the upcoming Athletics Carnivals. Students will apply learnt skills to refine their ability to correctly perform the events of shot put, discus, long jump, triple jump and high jump. Students will demonstrate and develop many skills common in sports and games such as the fundamental motor skills of throwing and catching through their participation in a variety of minor games. Throughout minor games students will also improve their decision-making skills and develop how to be a strategic thinker.
