Sporting News
Monday evening was the culmination of a successful Byrnes Shield campaign for KCC in 2023. KCC competed against MDCC for the 2nd week running in the Grand Final of the Byrnes Shield. We came agonisingly close to defeating our arch rival in a thrilling match that went down to the final ball of the game. More detail on that in a moment.
KCC began their competition v TRAC, without our Year 12 players who were on Retreat, and we went down by 5 wickets. This was despite admirable performances by Hayden Donohue and Jed Beavan with the bat and a few impressive late wickets by Campbell Mattingly.
Round 1
KCC def by TRAC by 5 wickets
KCC (Donohue 20, Beavan 19) All out for 82 off 19 overs
TRAC 5-83 off 17 (Mattingly 2-3)
In the 2nd fixture, KCC had a dominant win over KHS with our Year 12 players back in the side. Winning with 5 overs and 7 wickets in hand. A Man of the Match performance by Co-Captain Cooper Manson with bat and ball.
Round 2
KCC def KHS by 7wkts in 15 overs
KCC (Manson 63no, Singh 26) 3-131 off 15
KHS 3-130 off 20 (Manson 2-28)
The 3rd round fixture was an extremely tight contest with KCC ultimately going down by 1 run in the final over of the day. Man of the Match, Hayden Donohue, who is only in Year 8, was outstanding with both bat and ball.
Round 3
KCC def by WWHS by 1 run
KCC (Donohue 35, Guy 28) 8-110 off 20
WWHS 8-111 off 20 (Toohey 3-14, Donohue 2-22)
Our final round game was v MDCC. There was a scenario where all 5 teams could finish on equal points for the competition with final standings being decided by run rate. We defeated MDCC in a strong team performance and other results meant all teams did finish on the same points for the competition. Despite starting our final fixture in 3rd place, due to a superior overall run rate in the competition, we managed to finish in 1st position in the final standings, and MDCC maintained their 2nd position. This meant a replay in the Grand Final.
Round 4
KCC def MDCC by 3wkts
KCC (Singh 28, Manson 27, Guy 20) 7-128 off 17
MDCC ( Manson 2-19) 5-127 off 20
As mentioned earlier, the Grand Final was a very close contest with both teams evenly matched. Unfortunately, both sides did not have their best performances in the field, with catching and misfields being a feature for both Colleges. However, some solid bowling spells from Gus Lyons and Cooper Manson enabled KCC to give themselves a chance of running down MDCC’s good batting total of 139 off 20 overs.
KCC’s top and middle order remained determined to value their wicket and some focused batting put us in a position to win the match. The final few overs was a pressure cooker for both teams which resulted in some excellent bowling from MDCC and some defiant batting from KCC. Ultimately, KCC fell 1 run short of victory. Either side would have been worthy Champions, in what was the closest competition and Grand Final in recent memory.
Congratulations to all our squad on a successful campaign, they were great ambassadors for the College throughout the competition. A wonderful all round squad effort this year and we will be very competitive again in the coming years.
Special mentions to the following players for performances throughout the competition, Co-Capatains Cooper Manson and Myles Guy, Hayden Donohue, Jed Beavan and Arsh Singh.
