Prep Report

Welcome to Prep! We are very excited to start the new year and have a lot of fun and exciting learning experiences planned for the students. We have been learning all about places in our school and daily routines this week as well as making many new friends!  Check out some of our learning goals for Term One below.

LITERACY

Reading & Viewing:

  • Start to make the connection between letters and sounds
  • Participate in joint reading of a familiar book
  • Understand the concepts about print – front and back cover, spine, where to begin reading and the direction in which we read
  • Read some different types of literary texts
  • Develop their understanding of letters, words and sentences
  • Point to the words when reading aloud
  • Recognise that texts are created by authors who tell stories and share experiences that may be similar or different to the students’ own experiences.

Writing:

  • Retell familiar texts through use of illustrations and images
  • Learning how to correctly write our name startingwith a capital letter
  • Understand the connection between writing, reading and speaking
  • Develop their understanding of writing conventions – moving left to right across a page and from top to bottom.

Handwriting:

  • Develop correct pencil grip and posture
  • Be introduced to correct letter formations
  • Develop their fine motor skills
  • Practise writing every day.

Speaking & Listening:

  • Respond and share feelings about texts, identifying favourite authors, stories and illustrators
  • Understand that English is one of the many languages spoken in Australia and that different languages may be spoken by family, classmates and the community.

 Home Reading and Oxford Words

All children will have home reading books in their red folder to read with you every night. We ask that all parents to fill in the home diary as a reading record in the red bags every day after reading the book. The Oxford Words (given out in groups of ten) are an important part of our reading program at school. Your child’s classroom teacher will test your child and move them on to the next level when they are ready.

NUMERACY

  • How to use and care for Maths resources
  • To recognise, count and make single digit numbers
  • To understand what 0 means
  • To write numbers correctly
  • To make and recognise patterns.

REMINDERS:

  • Bring a healthy lunch and water bottle every day
  • Bring a fruit snack (vegetables or fruit)
  • Pack spare clothes in case of accidents
  • Bring your red bag each day
  • Please label everything your child brings to school (hats, lunch boxes, jumpers, jackets, bags, water bottles etc.)
  • Please bring a hat from home for students to wear at school.
