Inquiry: Geography

All through Term 3 the Junior Learning Community will be exploring Geography. Students were able to share their prior knowledge on Geography with classmates through a brainstorm.  Curiosity began to spark about countries of the world, as students asked questions about cultures, traditions, populations, natural disasters and proximity of countries to each other.

Inquiry Essential Question

The key question that the 1/2 cohort will be exploring this term is:

  • What makes countries special, what are their languages, cultures and traditions?

Students will begin by investigating different countries around the world through collaboration, choices, thinking prompts, problem solving, and group tasks. They will select a country that they are curious about, which will guide the beginning of creating their final projects.

There will be a large focus on identifying what a question is and learning how to ask appropriate questions to support with researching. Some examples include questions around the population, the clothing, the landmarks, and the traditions of the country. Students will also record information on maps, look at time zones, and be exposed to the land mass of various countries. Students will also be exposed to different weather patterns in countries and explore why they happen.

While maintaining a strong emphasis on student voice and choice, students will have the opportunity to choose how they would like to present their final project to their class. Some students have begun to show an interest in posters, videos and speaking presentations.
