Year 2

Ms Gililand, Mr Rowley, Ms Michetti and Ms Kay

A big welcome back to everyone after the summer break, and welcome to all of the new families joining us at Gilgai Plains Primary School in 2023. It has been a terrific start to the year as the Grade 2 students have settled in well with their teachers as well as making many new friends.

Learning in Year 2

Reading

These past few weeks we have been focusing on revising some of the work from last year and introducing some new content. We have been focusing on specific graphemes and phonemes, including “oo”, “oi” and “ou” for our words. We’ve also been working on building positive habits with reading, including choosing the right book for us and reading what we would like to read.

Writing

Writing has been plenty of fun these past few weeks. In addition to building our Writer’s Notebooks, which are looking great and full of ideas, we have been focusing on word choice, including using stronger language in descriptions and introducing interesting characters to our writing.

Maths

In Maths, we have been revising our knowledge of Place Value and what this looks like in the classroom. This includes building our understanding of why we do Place Value and draw up charts, as well as practicing using tens-frames, M.A.B, bundling sticks, and other materials that will be used for maths in Grade 2.

Inquiry

Our Inquiry topic has been community, and these past few weeks we have looked at our roles in the community and where we all fit in, as well as communities that we are a part of or hope to be a part of. We have also looked at some Indigenous Australian cultures, languages and stories and how they relate to us, as well as our connection to the school.

Riddle

I have a face and hands, but no body or arms. What am I?
