Year 1

Ms Crane, Ms Conforto, Ms Russo, Ms Harrington, Ms Maher, Ms Ripper and Ms Bowden

It has been a wonderful start to the year! The students have settled into year 1 beautifully and are already making lots of new friends. We are also already doing amazing learning! We have been learning about our school values, our emotions and the Zones Of Regulation, new graphemes and phonemes in reading, and place value in Maths. Us teachers feel very proud of our students and are feeling excited for the year ahead.

LEARNING THIS TERM

Literacy

This term students have been learning about the comprehension strategy, ‘text to self connections.’ We have been reading stories and discussing what the text has reminded us of in our lives. We have been learning that it is important to listen and understand what we are listening to. We have also jumped straight back into the Little Learners Love Literacy program. We have been revising our single letter phonemes/graphemes as well as learning about double letter graphemes such as /ll/ /ss/ and /ff/. We know that these graphemes are never used at the beginning of words.

Numeracy

Students are learning about Place Value in our Number sessions and have begun to explore how many tens and ones are in 2 digit numbers. We have also been learning about the order of the days of the week and the months of the year.

Personal and Social Learning

This term we are focusing on Our Gilgai and learning about what makes our school so wonderful. We have been learning about our school values and ways that we can show these values in the school yard and in our classrooms. We have also been learning about the Zones of Regulation. We have 4 Zones, the red zone, the yellow zone, the blue zone and the green zone. What zone we are in depends on our emotions. For example, when we feel sad we say we are feeling in the blue zone. We have been brainstorming many strategies to help us get back in the green zone - which is the Ready to Learn Zone.
