DAV School's Competition Rounds 1 & 3 2019

On the 14th May the Girton Grammar School Debating Teams competed in the first rounds of the Debater’s Debaters’ Association of Victoria Schools’ Competition. The students conducted themselves admirably and had many successes.

 

In D Grade, the D3 team consisting of Oshadha Kodippiliarachchi (7Jo), Jenna Ackland (7Jo) and Bailey Dolan (7A) competed in two debates; That we should ban horseracing losing narrowly, and winning the second debate, That we should abolish standardised testing (i.e. NAPLAN) by 1 point. Congratulations to all three speakers for competing for the first time!

In C Grade, our C2 consisting of Sam Wardrop (9A) Eric Lovett (10Jo), Nathan Jones (10Jo) debated the secret topic That we should increase Newstart (the unemployment benefit), winning by 1 point. Congratulations to Eric and Nathan for winning equal best speaker and Sam for competing in his very first debate!

 

Our VCE Grade Year 11 team 1 consisting of Dominic Tune (11Je), James Brown (11F), Noah Ashby (11F) and Dinith Tennakoon (11Je) lost the first VCE debate topic, That, instead of being elected, members of Parliament should be randomly selected, by only 2 points. Congratulations to James who won equal best speaker in the debate!

 

Our VCE Grade Year 11 team 2 consisting of Arunika Madina (11Je), Zoe Hilson (11F), Sophie Thompson (11F) and Simone Stephens (11F) lost the first VCE topic above by only 2 points, and won the second VCE debate secret topic That we should ban private cars, by 1 point, with Sophie winning best speaker! Congratulations to all 4 debaters who were competing in their very first debates!

 

Our VCE Grade Year 11 team 3 consisting of Soumik Das (11F), Jake Arulsuthan (11F), Danai Mahachi (11F) and Flynn Edwards (11M) won the first VCE topic above by 3 points, with Jake winning best speaker. Great work! Unfortunately, they lost the second VCE debate topic above. Congratulations to Flynn who competed in his first debate!

 

 

Our VCE Grade Year 12 team consisting of Abbey Saxon (12F), Charlie Wardrop (12A), Jordan Rogers (12M) and Max Tulloch (12Jo) won the first VCE topic above by 2 points, and the second VCE debate topic above by 4 points, with Charlie and Jordan awarded equal best speaker in the first debate and best speaker in the second debate. Choice!
