Mental Health Public Speaking Challenge Training Day

Six students from CGHS (Ryanne Akil, Phoebe Causley-Todd, Prabhleen Kaur, Dhriti Iyengar, Emeline Waterson & Joanne Hu) attended the MHPSC Training Day on 5th June at Rivendell Child, Adolescent & Family Centre, Concord West with Mrs Cooper. The day began with lunch then meeting other participating schools in the challenge. Mental Health professionals and support teams also discussed the issues faced by youth in the area of mental health, then students broke into groups to discuss good public speaking tips. School then drew their topics for the challenge final to be held at St Ursula's College next term - CGHS will be researching and speaking about "What does an inclusive school look like for transgender students, and how can it improve the mental health of this population". Good luck to our students as they prepare for the challenge, and help to improve communication and awareness of youth mental health.

D Day a Day of Dance & Drama

“I really loved being able to punch and kick everyone!”

These words summed up why Year Seven student Isabella Rossi enjoyed  the  D Day experience on Friday 14th June 2019.  The day which was devoted to Dance & Drama was used to enable Year seven students to recognise the demands of the professional industry as well as giving students a chance to explore their own skills, interest and ability in these areas.   The day gave our girls a varied range of experiences and opportunities offering the opportunity to work with experts and classroom teachers to explore areas they may not as yet had a chance to explore.

Students participated in Hip Hop, dance, improvisation and Stage Fighting workshops and looked at the role of make-up in the performance industry.  Our professional in the industry Fiona Cooper demonstrated the skills involved in transforming an actor into character through the magic of make-up.  The smoke and mirrors of stage fighting were also explored with students learning the tricks of the trade to enable an audience to think they are seeing violence on stage when it is really tightly choreographed action and reaction.  Director of Imagination Theatre,  Annerose De Jong worked with classes to explore how the skills and techniques of improvisation can be used beyond the stage and how they can set students up to cope with a range of real life experiences such as the interview for the perfect job,  or that difficult discussion with the boss for a pay increase.  Dance classes were designed to enable students with limited dance experience and those with extensive training to participate appropriate to their experience.  Year seven made a very positive response to the day and they obviously enjoyed the chance to vary the timetable.   It was apparent to staff teaching on the day that there is a lot more talent and creativity to be mined from the present Year 7 students.

Student-led Youth Empowerment Forum 12 June 2019

On Wednesday 12th June our school was represented by Senior SRC students and Prefects attending a 'Youth Empowerment Forum at Burwood Girls High School.' The guest speakers, Isaiah Dawe, Kate Koschel, Lakshmi Logathassan and Sara Saleh who attended the forum told us of their unique stories full of hardships they needed to overcome. They encouraged us to work hard and strive for success despite these hardships and all their speeches left a resounding impact on all the students, which will be felt for the rest of their lives.  – Michelle LEE – SRC Treasurer

Tennis Knock Out

Congratulations to our four tennis stars who competed in the Met East Regional Tennis Knockout Competition. Buia David, Annabel Payne, Emily Giang and Gabrielle Waterson competed with great heart in our draw, which included Kirrawee and Woolooware High Schools. We managed 3 sets each against Kirrawee, but disappointingly lost the match on a countback of games. There was greater success in the following match against Woolooware, where we won the match 4 sets to 2. This allowed us to go through to the Finals for the first time in many years. Unfortunately, we could not attend the Finals day due to our students’ commitment to the School Production. A special mention has to be made of Buia David who managed to win every one of her sets, finishing the day undefeated. Congratulations Buia and to the other 3 students who played amazingly throughout the day.

Table Tennis Knock Out

The knock-out table tennis competition was a great opportunity for us to improve our skills and play against many other students from different schools. April, Ruxing, Kylie, and I caught the train early in the morning from Canterbury Station to get to Sydney Olympic Park on time, and we arrived at the sports hall at around 8:30am. We lost our first game, each of us playing a singles match and then playing doubles. As the day progressed, we became more confident with our abilities and we were able to have some fun matches against other schools and among ourselves. Despite our efforts, we went on to lose against Sydney Boys and Central Sydney Intensive English High School.

We decided to have a lunch break at this point. This seemed to be the right choice as we won our first game immediately after! What a great way to finish the day! We spent the rest of the day playing for fun against other schools for the rest of the day before catching the train back home. In conclusion, the competition was a very fun and enriching experience, and we are very grateful to the school for providing us with these exciting opportunities.

NAIDOC WEEK

We are holding a special assembly for NAIDOC Week on Monday 1st of July 2019 at 11.15 am in the MPC at CGHS. A number of our students will be performing in the assembly and a guest speaker will explain the significance of this week to the school. For this year’s NAIDOC the girls discussed wearing their tribe’s individual styles of Open Ceremony Ocha. By doing so they are aiming to not only show pride in their shared culture, but also express the variety of the Dreaming, and their people’s connection to country within their different tribes. If you are able to attend could you please click here and arrange for the slip to be returned to Mr Nolan as soon as possible for catering and seating arrangements.

PSC

The NSW Premier's Sporting Challenge (PSC) encourages all students in public schools to be more active, more often by increasing their participation in sport and physical activity. CGHS has participated in the challenge again this term with Year 7 students filling out their weekly activity log books in their PDHPE classes. Keep up the great effort Yr 7 and participating staff. The PSC will conclude at the end of the Term 2 holidays.
