No More Chocolate Selling

Canterbury Girls High School will no longer be selling chocolates or other confectionery as part of fundraising drives.  Individual students who may have previously brought in chocolate boxes for sale for  local community organisations will no longer be given approval to do so.  We have taken this decision in line with contemporary health policies and nutrition guidelines aimed at combating the health risks related to obesity, diabetes and heart disease.  We ask families to support us in conveying the message that diet and exercise are crucial to maintaining healthy weight and lifestyle. While we may continue to hold bake sales from time to time we will be looking at healthier alternatives at every opportunity.  We welcome your suggestions!

Business Promotion Opportunity with P&C

As you know we are organising our major fundraiser for the year, a Comedy night to be held on August the 17th. We are looking for donations from a MAJOR SPONSOR to pay the comedians and contribute towards food/drinks etc. Funds raised on the night will go back into the school for needed grounds/technology upgrades. In return for the donation we could offer the business logo on advertising for the night, flyers at the event, thank you from the MC, and advertising in 2 newsletters after the event. We could also give the business some tickets! If you have a business or know someone who does who might be interested in being our sponsor, please contact us at canterburygirlshspandc@gmail.com

Student Facilities at CGHS

At CGHS our students are lucky to have a small kitchen area where they can heat up food using the three microwave ovens named Matt, George and Gary. The students also have access to a boiling water tap to help them with noodle cups. In order to maintain this facility, students are asked to wipe up after they have used the area and, our year 8 Office Messengers (who are rostered on each day) have the task to complete a final wipe-over after lunch. The SRC maintain overall responsibility for the up-keep and recently raised $70.00 to offset the cost of purchasing two new microwaves.

Tell Them From Me Survey

As mentioned in the previous newsletter, the results from our Term 1 Tell Them from Me student surveys are in. The document we have attached in this newsletter looks at student outcomes and school climate across social-emotional and academic domains. The data as a whole is extremely positive for Canterbury Girls - we are on par or above the state mean in most areas, and where there are dips in our scores, these are in areas where it is experienced across the State. In particular our trend data, which compares our results in this year's survey to previous years' results is extremely encouraging. So the first use of the data gathered by this survey will be as evidence of our effective impact in education for girls. Head teachers and staff teams will also utilise this data to target specific areas for improvement in wellbeing, engagement and quality teaching and learning. In partnership with expert advice from CESE (Centre for Education Statistics and Evaluation) we will explore the evidence with a view to improving such aspects as perseverance, academic buoyancy and growth orientation.

Year 7 Students as Partners Surveys Term 2

The following email has been sent to all Year 7 students and families to complete their learning surveys for Term 2. Further surveys will be done in Term 3 and in Term 4 all Year 7 will prepare a Learning Presentation to reflect on their year's work in the classroom:

It is now time to complete your learning surveys for Term 2.  Please complete them over the final weeks of Term 2 by July 5th (last day of term 2).

The purpose of the surveys is to promote reflection on your learning and have you think about how you learn best. When you do your Learning Presentations in Term 4 the surveys will be an important and useful part of your annual reflection on your progress.

In term 2, please submit one response for PDHPE, Language, VA, Technology, Drama.

if you still need to catch up and complete your Term 1 surveys, please do. For term 1, please submit one response for each of English, Mathematics, Science and HSIE

The link to the Google Form is https://forms.gle/ESS614H9Jc9iSUdU6

You can complete the surveys during class time if your teachers can provide time to do so; or in Personal Best / DEAR, or in your own time at school in breaks or at home as part of your homework time.

The response to the Term 1 surveys was of an excellent standard, with the majority of students completing surveys as suggested. If you missed doing Term 1 surveys it is not too late to do them, and it will still be useful for you to do so, as the reflections you make now will be included in the end of year Learning Presentation.

It is also important to keep a record of your response and reflection on each major assessment task for the Learning Presentation. We have designed a Student Assessment Task Reflection Sheet to do this. Use this link from the Year 7 curriculum page on the website or look for the document in Moodle in the Personal Learning Plan/Students and Parents as Partners for Learning course:

LATE ARRIVALS TO SCHOOL and EARLY LEAVE REQUESTS

Late arivals to school were mentioned in a previous newsletter. While we know some lateness is unavoidable and beyond student and family control (eg late bus, major traffic incident) a punctual arrival to school each day is generally expected. Our website has a section on our late to school procedures and this is also published in the Student Infomation Booklet. All students who are late to school have a notification sent to families and we regularly communicate with families if their student is late without adequate explanation on numerous occasions over a period of time.

EARLY LEAVE REQUESTS - could families/carers please submit early leave requests by letter or on Schoolstream App by 8.40am on the day of the request (we will process requests received on the day before as well, if you know it's coming up, please apply early!)

Wet Weather Sport - Early Leave is not granted due to Wet Weather Sport.
