Student & School Community Achievements

Tribe & Tribulation School Musical

Congratulations to all of those students, teachers and parents that contributed to this year’s very successful school musical Tribe & Tribulation.  The work process was lengthy but the standard of performance, the delight and involvement of our students and the sheer exuberance of all of those students that participated makes this event a highlight of the school calendar.  Whether it be those that applied the make-up, operated the fog machines, whether they were singing the solos or cavorting through the dance and drama with such skill and presence, it all delighted the audiences.  The P&C provided soup that excelled, the cakes and slices were fabulous and as a member of the audience stated “it was as polished as a professional production”.  Students visiting from primary schools were enthralled by the colour, music and energy. CGHS year groups watched with absorption and contributed meaningful and perceptive comments and questions on conclusion of their show.  The vibrancy of the whole show was something that CGHS appears to be able to achieve with grace and ease.  That must be the reason why plans are already being discussed for the next school musical in 2021.

The Gayle Gibson Pavilion was officially opened in a student run memorial service on Friday June 14. P&C represented by Chris Dunstan and Heather Veitch did the official unveiling of the pavilion's name. Attended by family, friends and colleagues including husband Mr Tony Giorgiou and Gayle's sister Margaret, the function was a fitting tribute to a much loved teacher, friend and colleague in the Canterbury Girls High School community. School captains Amaani Fieldes-Busingye and Ruby Gee spoke with eloquence on the contributions to girls' education accomplished by Ms Gibson. They had a few amusing anecdotes to share from their times in the classroom, but above all a sense of Gayle's absolute passion for teaching mathematics to girls was abundant. Colleagues Ms Kathie Burgess and Ms Jane Slattery also spoke about the joys of working alongside Gayle as a head teacher and as a staffroom colleague. Again there were amusing anecdotes, and always the strong theme of how much there was from Gayle's life we look back on with deep thanks and knowledge of how lucky we have all been to know her. Congratulations to the SRC students Arame Nicolls and Chaltu Strachan for their chairing of the event, and to SEA students for assistance in the planting of the "GG" pansy garden alongside the orange blossom gum planted by Tony and Margaret.

Year 7 Social Inclusion Day in partnership with Ashfield Boys HS

For a number of years Canterbury Girls and Ashfield Boys have partnered on this project in which a half day is spent at one of the high schools and both Year 7 groups take part in a program of wellbeing activities coordinated by the PDHPE faculties. The focus is on a range of social interactions including team building, coooperation, collaboration and interpersonal skills. With growing cohorts in both schools this year's event saw close to 300 students enjoy the day which included a sausage sizzle BBQ lunch. Trivia quiz time, getting to know you icebreakers, a mini olympics style tug of war and some drama games and art activities to round out the day. Many thanks to Ashfield Boys Principal Dwayne Hopwood and staff who accompanied students to Canterbury Girls High School this year. Also a big thankyou to our teachers who organised and ran the day - Ms Dunn, Ms Naisbett, Ms Strachan, Ms Texier, Ms Burzese and Ms Caprin being the key staff involved.
