Message from the College Acting Principal

Dear Parents and Carers,

It has been a very busy yet successful term. As a College we have been busy examining our work from the past four years in the build-up to developing our next strategic plan which will become the focus for school improvement until 2023. This document will be available for our community by mid term 4.

In the last week we have received our 2019 NAPLAN results. Keeping in mind that these results are only a snapshot of student achievement on test day we have performed extremely well as a College.

Some highlights from our whole school results are as follows:

  • On average, our scores compared to last year have gone up in 17 out of 20 tests.
  • The growth of our students (the improvement from the last time they completed the test, for example Year 3 in 2017 compared to Year 5 in 2019) is higher than the state average in all areas except for writing (which will be a major focus for improvement for our school in 2020).
  • The number of students who achieved in the top 2 bands (the two highest grades in the start) has gone up in 16 out of the 20 tests.

Students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 should have received their individual results in the portfolios this week. If you need support reading them or want further information you can access the following website https://www.nap.edu.au/results-and-reports/student-reports, or see your child’s classroom teacher.

I wish everybody a safe and enjoyable school holidays.

Kind Regards

Mark Zahra

Messages from Assistant Principals

Dear Parents and Carers,

When parents/carers support the College and the learning of their child in the classroom, we achieve amazing results. We see many parents/carers also celebrating the success of their child, which impacts school success and connectedness to school. We have also noticed a huge increase of children are arriving to school and class on time, every day. Great work!

Book Parade

Last Thursday 5 September, all Prep-Year 2 students had the opportunity to dress up and take part in our annual Book Parade, for English and Mathematics Week. All students looked amazing in their favourite book characters and paraded around the gym showing off their costumes.

The purpose of the Book Parade is to encourage the love of reading, as the greater the reader, the better the learner. Please take the time to read with your child every day and please take the opportunity to speak with your child's teacher if you would like information on your child’s reading level, or on how to best support your child with their learning at home.

Year 2 Sleepover

We remind Year 2 parents that the Year 2 Sleep Over is taking place on Friday 25 October, Term 4. The Sleepover is part of our whole school camp program and is a great experience and opportunity for children to build their independence and experience with being away from parents/carers and the comforts of home. We remind Year 2 parents to please pay and give consent through the Compass application.

Term 4

We have had another successful term full of learning opportunities and excitement. I am very proud of each and every student at Tarneit P-9 College and would like to take this opportunity to thank our teachers and staff for continuously working hard to make sure that every child achieves their very best. I am exciting about all the enjoyment and success Term 4 will bring.

Please have a safe and relaxing break with your family and friends. We encourage students to read for 10 – 20 minutes every day with their parents and take the time to enjoy the ward sunshine (fingers crossed). See you in Term 4!

Kind Regards

Matthew Naudi

Assistant Principal Prep - Year 2

Dear Parents and Carers,

As the end of term is fast approaching, we can celebrate some fantastic events and achievements happening across Year 3 and 4.

The students have been involved in English and Mathematics week where they took part in a themed lesson about influential people. They were also some fantastic entries into the writing competition about an inspirational person. Continuing on with this theme, students participated in a year level book parade, where it was heart-warming to see so many students and staff dress up and be a part of this special event.

The students have been very engaged whilst focusing on procedural texts. They explored a variety of procedural texts which included science reports, recipes and ‘how to’ instructions for games. They did this through completing science experiments and linking their learning to real life experiences.

During STEM, the Year 3 and 4’s have been creating simple machines and using the Tarneit College Design Process to support them to plan, produce, evaluate their creations. They have been thoroughly engaged and innovative, so please ask them all about it!

We have recently received NAPLAN results and we are so proud of the all the students across the college and especially the Year 3 students and their growth during their first NAPLAN tests. Hopefully they have shared their success with you!

Enjoy your break with family and friends and looking forward to an exciting Term 4.

Kind Regards

Teagan Currie

Assistant Principal Year 3-4

Dear Parents and Carers,

I cannot believe we are already at the end of Term 3. Where has the year gone!? As always, students have been extremely busy with their learning in the Middle Years. Students have been publishing their picture story books the past few weeks. You can see their published writing pieces in their portfolios that went home last Wednesday.

In STEM, students created a marble maze game inspired by pinball machines using various recycled objects, paper and Lego. In this engineering activity, students created all kinds of amazing structures for their marbles to go through, as they worked through the design process.

On Thursday , as part of R U OK Day, student completed various activities across the college. The day was dedicated to reminding students that every day is the day to ask “Are you ok?” and support those struggling with life’s ups and downs.

I hope everyone has a fantastic break and look forward to seeing all of our students return well rested and refreshed for a big Term 4.

Kind Regards,

Barry Devlin

Assistant Principal Years 5-6

Dear Parents and Carers,

As we conclude Term 3, our Year 7-9 students have been busy completing assessment tasks for all subjects but have also been taking part in a range of excursions. Many students participated in the Victorian State School Spectacular on Saturday 14 September have been rehearing throughout the term and we would like to thank them for the amazing performance.

All our Year 8 students have now completed their swimming program and have gained some invaluable lifelong skills that they can use. Our Year 8 students have also been introduced to potential leadership roles for next year as well as the introduction of the Alpine program where we select 4 Year 9 students to attend the program for 2020.

Our Year 7 students have had more visits to the Wyndham Tech School over the last fortnight with a focus on the use of drones. As our Year 9 students prepare for their last term at our College, we look at preparing them for the demands and responsibilities of senior school with a focus on their pathways. All Year 9 students now have an action plan for the next 3 years that they have mapped out in their Learning to Learn lessons and will continue to do so next term.

We anticipate a busy Term 4 with a range of summer sporting events as well as the rugby state finals that our u14 girls will participate in, Year 7 camp and a range of excursions for our Year 8 and 9 students.

Kind Regards,

John Eskander

Assistant Principal Years 7-9

Dear Parents and Carers,

What a busy term we’ve had! Last week we celebrated English & Mathematics Week, with many different events and activities taking place to promote these curriculum areas across the college. Our junior students took part in our annual book parade and it was wonderful to see so much enthusiasm and support for this event from our community, thank you to all of our families who joined us to wave their children along the parade! The students and teachers all looked fantastic dressed as their favourite book character or inspirational person. Our Year 3-6 students were involved in the fun of dressing up too, and they engaged with a special lesson about inspirational people. Students from Year 6-9 attended talks hosted by two inspiring authors, with a group of students participating in the Melbourne Writers Festival in the city. We also celebrated STEM Night, and again,
