Year 12 Final Weeks

Parents/Guardians and Students are asked to make sure they are familiar with critical dates and deadlines that were outlined in the previous newsletter and provided in the recent correspondence to everyone.

Student Focus

  • Year 12 students – I have met with the Year 12 student body and highlighted the importance of the last three weeks of this term at the College. 100% attendance is crucial, especially as their final assessments have been programmed in these weeks. Students and parents need to be acutely aware that any absence may potentially have a negative impact on their son/daughters results and their capacity to achieve the WACE. I encourage the students to remain focused on finishing the year off on a positive note.
  • Year 11 & 10 students – for these students it is normal timetable through until the end of the year.

Course Counselling For 2020

At this time of the year most schools have well and truly sorted course selections for 2020. It is a bit less of an issue with us here at Harvey Ag because the choices are more limited but even so, parents/carers and their children need to be thinking about pathways for next year.

For the most part, students are likely to remain in their current pathway. Students going into Year 11 will be required to make decisions about their future pathway in Term 4. Students need to consider the following questions when making their decisions:

  • What grades have I got this year in class subjects?  The ATAR stream has higher level courses so passes in all subjects would be expected for students continuing or choosing this in Year 11.
  • How did I rate in the OLNA testing?  Only students who have achieved the ONLA in all categories are eligible for the ATAR stream.
  • What is my attitude to learning? All streams need students to be motivated and organised to do well but again the ATAR stream requires a higher level of academic application.
  • What has been my progress in Trades and Farm? Sometimes more time given doesn’t equate with greater outcomes. General students can elect additional time in Trades or Farm but if the student doesn’t have the right work ethic this is a waste of time.

For Year 11 students in 2020 the following applies. Further detail can be gained from the Curriculum Prospectus, when it is provided.

  • ATAR Pathway - students will study the Year 11 ATAR courses that make up the WACE curriculum three days per week, plus 1 day on Farm and 1 day on Trades.
  • General Pathway students study the Year 11 General courses that make up the  WACE for two days per week, plus 1 day on Farm and 1 day on Trades. Students will elect to take on an additional day each week on Farm or Trades.

Note: ALL students in Year 11 will be required to undertake the trades areas, with choices to opt out becoming available in Year 12.

Year 12 in 2020

Year 12’s next year will have access to the same streams as this year. It is likely most students will remain in their current stream.

I aim to get around to class groups over the next couple of weeks to talk to students about their options for next year. Parents and students with questions or concerns can contact me at any time.

Year 10 in 2020

This is a predetermined course and students are not required to make any subject selections.

In 2020 we will divide Year 10’s into groups on the basis of their NAPLAN Literacy results and on the basis of quantifiable ability, which enables teachers to be able to cater far better for the needs of the students in each group.

Parent Survey

All parents/guardians should have received an email on Monday 9th September inviting them to complete a survey in regards to Parent Guardian Opinions for 2019. If parents/guardians have not done so I would encourage you to complete the survey to provide feedback to the College. The survey will take approximately 10 minutes to complete. Thank you for participating in this survey. A copy of the link is provided below if you require it.

https://www.schoolsurvey.edu.au/s/TkMaNTkL.

The survey is available until 27/09/2019 6:00:00 PM,  Australian Eastern Standard Time (AEST).

I wish all students a safe and well-earned break at the end of the term!
