Year 3 News

Last week the Year 3 students began their new unit of inquiry ‘Sharing the planet’ which looks at the human impact on animals.

The students embarked on a virtual tour around Melbourne Zoo where they were introduced to many endangered animals.

The students then learnt about a ‘local legend’ (Australian endangered animal) of their choice and used the zoo website to find out more about their chosen animal. They found out their conservation status, the reason they are in danger and how we can help.

We are very proud of the empathy students showed when finding out about these local legends.

Students in Action

Several Year 3 students have already taken action and adopted an endangered animal.

Three boys in 3A joined forces and adopted a Tasmanian Devil called Neptune. Well done to Klaus, Jensen and Ryder in 3A for initiating this action with their parents.

Two students in 3D also adopted endangered animals. Well done to Edith  for adopting Mika the Koala and Oliver  who adopted Nami the orangutan.

Ava N in 3B has also taken action. Ava created a poster to spread the work about protecting orangutans and has put it in a tree in her front yard to inform the neighbourhood.

The students are now preparing a presentation to share an endangered animal’s story with their classmates. The hope is that by sharing the story of an endangered animal, it will spread awareness across the community. This is called our “I Speak for the Animals” project, where students are speaking for animals who can’t speak for themselves.

When we return to school, the students will prepare a factual narrative about their animal, record the story on flipgrid and share these with the school community.

Well done Year 3!!
