The Year One Remote Learning Happenings

Week 8 INQUIRY

As the saying goes “all good things must come to an end” and this is the case as the Year One students are now in the final weeks of, what has possibly been, their favourite Unit of Inquiry yet.

The students have continued to learn that ‘food goes through many stages of production before reaching us’. Last week saw the Year Ones exploring the processes involved in creating many dairy products. We brainstormed our knowledge of the products made from cow’s milk and then inquired further, by watching farmers talk about their dairy farms and the process that cow’s milk goes through to create products including cheese, yoghurt, and ice-cream.

The children were most surprised to hear the ‘fun fact’ that most toothpaste brands contain dairy products.

PIZZA MAKING

Tuesday of last week was our annual ‘Year One Pizza Making Day’! The students came together in their double classrooms (1A & 1B, 1C & 1D) where they shone in their respective kitchens.

We certainly have some creative young chefs within our cohort of children. There were margherita pizzas, Hawaiian pizzas, prawn pizzas, pizzas with the lot among a myriad of other topping concoctions. We had round pizzas, rectangular pizzas and even a love heart pizza. We will let the pictures tell the rest of the story.

LITERACY

Our Pizza Making Day gave our students the opportunity to continue to demonstrate their reading abilities as they volunteered to read aloud the ingredients, utensils and the method involved to create the pizza dough.

The students followed up their pizza making day by writing a procedural piece. We were impressed by the students’ ability to use their newly learnt knowledge of time connectives to explain the process of making pizza from scratch.

SMART Spelling activities took on a new look this week as the students were given an activity grid to choose from many creative ways to spell out their 6 spelling words.

MATHS

Our maths lessons followed on with the pizza theme on Monday and Tuesday, as we learnt all about basic fractions (½, 1/3, ¼ and 1/8). Each child was also supplied with a template of the ‘Pizza Fraction Game’ to play with their families.

Our other maths lessons in Week 8 focused on data representation and interpretation. We created tally and bar graphs and interpreted the data of our class’ favourite sports and fruits.

Week 9 INQUIRY

This week we have continued to develop our knowledge and process about another important food source, ‘honey’! We learnt just how important bees are in our world and not only in their job of creating honey, but also their ability to pollenate plants and help in the process of creating coffee beans too.

We partook in a pre-recorded incursion with a beekeeper who informed us about the importance of supporting local beekeepers and who also took us on a virtual tour, demonstrating each process that goes into bringing honey from the hive and into our homes.

LEMONADE SCONES

This Tuesday we had another bake off in our kitchens, at home. Our Year One students took on the challenge of creating ‘3 Ingredient Lemonade Scones’ and they were a big hit among all families.

LITERACY - Recipe Review

Our Lemonade Scone follow up literacy activity this week was to write up a ‘Recipe Review’. We first learnt about the purpose of reviews, why we write them, why we read them and then discussed the importance of writing reviews to a target audience.

The students enjoyed using their knowledge of adjectives and then carefully selecting appropriate adjectives that would help to create feelings, to entice the reader.

The students this week have also learnt to distinguish between homonyms, homophones and homographs, a hard feat, even for adults.

The students will spend the remainder of Term 3’s writing sessions exploring the aspects involved in creating their very own imaginative narrative piece. The children will be guided daily through each process from the planning, character development and will then be given instructions on how to write a ‘Sizzling Start’, ‘Mighty Middle’ and ‘Excellent Ending’. We cannot wait to see the result of the children’s books once they have “published” and “illustrated” them.

MATHS

For the remainder of the term our students will revise the split strategy for two-digit addition and subtractions equations. They will then revisit fact families. Our measurement unit will now focus on telling the time, teaching o’clock and half past times, both digitally and on analogue.

BOOKWEEK

WELLBEING

The Year One students have continued to partake in daily wellbeing activities throughout weeks 8, 9 and will continue in week 10. We have attempted to mix up our sessions to keep them interesting, fun, educational and engaging.

Monday’s yoga sessions continue to be a favourite; however, we have also explored many social stories exploring a range of emotions and personal qualities. We have completed The Resilience Project @home lessons as well as weekly Cyber Safety Project lessons. Please see the photos of our budding yogis in pose!
