2021 Naplan Results- Celebrating Success

Dr David Howes Deputy Secretary, Department of Education and Training Victoria has publicly congratulated every school and student for their Naplan results.

David said: ” Victorian schools and students have cause for celebration this term. In the face of the considerable disruptions of the past year, we have recorded the nation’s highest literacy and numeracy growth.

It was very encouraging to hear in the media last week that Victorian schools were leading the nation in the Naplan results despite the many lockdowns endured by children, staff and families.  However, on a more local level it was even better to receive the BNPS Naplan results and see how well our children had achieved.

During the past 4 years we have been implementing whole school approaches in Literacy which was a part of the curriculum identified in our Strategic Plan as an area for improvement.  The Leadership team established targets and the Literacy committee investigated best practice and resources.

After extensive research we decided to implement a number of approaches across the school which included SMART spelling, Scriibi (6 + 1 Traits), Writers’ Notebook, CAFÉ and the Daily 5.  This has involved purchasing resources as well as on-going professional development and support for staff.

One of our measures of success was the Naplan data so when we received ours this week and discovered significant gains in all areas of Literacy we were very pleased. BNPS has excelled particularly in Spelling and Writing as well as achieving very good results in Reading commensurate with ‘like’ schools, i.e. schools similar in demographics to ours and also when compared to our network schools.

Congratulations to our hard-working students and our dedicated staff who have committed to these initiatives, ensuring a shared approach to Literacy and optimum learning for our students.

All families with students in Years 3 and 5 should have now received their child’s Naplan report.  The reports were mailed to all families last Friday.  Please contact the school if your child’s report has not arrived.

Lockdown 6.0

Certainty for the rest of term, knowing what’s happening is a good thing with the importance of routine, security, predictability, giving a sense for students to know what’s occurring.

Lockdown 6.0 has meant that many of our activities planned for July and August have had to be cancelled or postponed. Thankfully many of these activities have been able to proceed virtually.

Book week Celebrations Online

On Friday 27 August we celebrated Book week. I would like to congratulate our students for their creativity and originality with their outfits of their favourite book characters.

Many of the staff were unrecognisable with their very clever and humorous outfits.  I visited many of the classes and the smiles on the children’s faces made my day.   Well done everyone.

Virtual Incursions

The Year 2 students attended an incursion titled "Wild Explorers- Life Cycles" which was run by Zoos Victoria Education.

The Year 3 students attended an RACV safety session to discuss road safety and they also touched on safety around the home, such as being safe with trampolines, bunk beds and in the kitchen.

Maths VHAP Masterclass

This year we have had many students in Year 5 and 6 involved in the Victorian High-Ability Program for Maths.  As a conclusion to this program for 2021 each student will be  participating in the Maths VHAP Masterclass.

This Masterclass will be run virtually, through Zoom. This is an exciting opportunity for students at Beaumaris North Primary School to work alongside like-minded students from other local schools.

Teaching Online

How quickly have we adapted to teaching online?

I would like to sincerely thank our staff for their ongoing commitment to the provision of an exemplary teaching approach whilst online.

On behalf of the staff I would also like to sincerely thank one of our dads, Mr Garreth Wilson, who donated several large screen monitors, keyboards and mice for use by the staff. These additional devices have allowed the staff to setup home offices with two screens operating which has proved invaluable for Remote Learning.  The sophistication that has occurred is amazing.

Year 5 Camp

One of the hardest activities impacted by the lockdown has been our Year 5 camp.  We are extremely excited to announce that we have managed to secure an additional date for this camp for late term 4.

Our Year 5 students had already missed their Year 4 Camp and we were determined to find a date for 2021 if possible.

Fingers crossed our other planned camps will be able to proceed.

Staff Changes

As term 3 comes to a close, we are farewelling Mrs Helen Griffiths and welcoming back Mrs Audrey Fine who has been on leave. We have thoroughly enjoyed having Helen on staff and appreciate her creative contribution to the musical education of our students. We wish Helen all the best for her future plans.

We are in the process of developing a class structure for next year and we require accurate student numbers.
