Careers Expo

Senior Years Careers Expo Day

Last Wednesday (11th August) was a day where senior students were able to virtually access both Tertiary institution representatives and a variety of guest speakers from a range of industries. Students were able to gain an insight into the opportunities, courses and experiences available in higher education and the journeys and experiences of people in their own careers and the paths that they have taken.

TERTIARY EXPO

Course and study information was presented to students by representatives from:

Information also included study fees, scholarships, work placement, industry and cadetship opportunities, and the various support services that each institution offers like sporting, social, and creative clubs, accommodation and wellbeing services.

Students were able to engage and ask questions of the representatives and get an insight into the day to day life of a tertiary student. Some presentation recordings and information links can be accessed via the Compass News Feed.

I thought it was very insightful and helped me get a grasp of what the different universities are like.

Nikita K.

What I found helpful was finding out the different pathways and structures of courses taken at different Universities. It allowed me to differentiate between the different schools and to see what I preferred.

I was able to understand the structure of each university course and be able to see what each uni has to offer both on courses and clubs, etc.

GUEST SPEAKERS

Guest speakers also offered interesting and engaging presentations on their own career journeys and what their ‘world of work’ looks like today. It was a great opportunity for students to receive firsthand knowledge of occupations that they may be thinking of, or open up career ideas that are completely new to them.

Guest speakers were from a diverse range of industries such as Trades and Apprenticeships, Electrical and Building trades, Journalism, Science, Engineering and Robotics, Volunteering Overseas and Gap Year experiences, Economics, IT Start-ups and Entrepreneurship, Career change: Science to Marketing Communications, Health Science and Youth Work, Visual Merchandising and Careers in Sport.

A consistent message from all presenters was how their career journey has at times taken some different and unexpected changes, but that the learning along the way is always useful and that change in direction is ok.

The Career Expo Day offered a great opportunity to explore both the Tertiary world and the world of work for our senior students, with many career paths to think about and explore further. Many of the guest speakers’ presentations were also recorded – links and information can be accessed via the Compass News Feed (19/8).

Hearing information about different career options and pathways which i haven't previously considered was helpful. This has given me the chance to look into some other possibilities I didn't previously knew existed, especially the volunteering programs.

Jess M.

I liked hearing Matt's opinion on taking an unorthodox path to a certain style of work. A sports career seems cool in how different it is to that of a general method such as the economics presenters.

Max P.

I learnt that it will take time to get where you want to be, don't expect everything to be available to you just after university.
