VET Courses in 2022

Changes to subsidised VET courses 2022 and beyond, effecting popular Endeavour Pathway options

From 1 July 2021 school students wishing to access subsidised VET courses commencing from 1 January 2022 will undertake the new VET Readiness Orientation (VETRO) process, which assesses students’ readiness to commence a VET pathway. The VET Readiness Orientation (VETRO) has been developed by the Department for Education and Department for Innovation and Skills, as the entry point to VET for school students. It is  an initial assessment, induction and orientation to VET to ensure that students enrol in a course that is right for them and has their personal and learning support needs planned for.

VETRO will determine a student’s readiness to commence a VET pathway and identify any support that a student may need to commence, and succeed, in vocational training. VETRO will be carried out once a student has decided to commence a vocational pathway in Year 11 or 12. There are two elements to the VETRO process – eligibility and assessment.

To be eligible for referal the student must meet the following criteria: - Completion of  a relevant work experience, paid work or volunteer  placement AND / OR short courses of a VET pathway

The College along with the family will complete a VETRO application form which will be sent to the preferred training organisation. The training organisation will determine course suitability, literacy and numeracy levels and individual support needs for the applicant. This will initially be administered in the form of the Snapshot Reading and Numeracy Indicator (SRNI), with further assessment undertaken if necessary in arrangement with the training organisation

Whilst our expectation in our VET Pathways programs has always been that a student wishing to access the course will need to have shown a genuine interest through experience in the industry such as work placement or previous short course, this is now being mandated by the government for students in subsidised VET programs such as those in construction, electrotechnology, plumbing, automotive, animal care, child care, hospitality, IT and hair and beauty.

As you can see from the timeline below the turn around is tight so if a student is interested in one of these courses then they will need to ensure they have met the above requirements and meet with Mrs Fitridge with their family to complete the VETRO Application form before the end of Week 7 to ensure timely submission of the referral forms to our preferred Training Organisations.

Students who do not meet the end of Week 7 date will not be eligible to complete these subsidised VET courses in Semester 1 of 2022.

SATAC Applications due date reminder 30 September

The SATAC website is the place to go to apply for both TAFE and university entrance for 2022. TAFE is constantly updating their course offerings and the website is the most up to date information on what courses are on offer and where. You can apply for 4 courses at TAFE and it is a great back-up plan for university entry.  Many students have commenced or completed the university application on SATAC and we were fortunate to have Joel Driver from Adelaide University on campus on Monday talking individually to our students about their career plans and potential courses. We will have a representative from Uni SA here next Monday 30th August who will be available to answer any specific questions about courses and their Year 12 Grades Guaranteed Entry Pathway. Below is further information from Flinders regarding their alternative entry pathways.

Flinders University – Year 11 Grades entry pathway

Flinders is offering conditional places based on Year 11 results in some courses. Available courses are listed online along with the required levels of achievement - https://www.flinders.edu.au/study/pathways/year-12-entry/year-11-grades-admission-pathway . Students can apply on this website and complete a parent/caregiver declaration of consent. This needs to be completed before Saturday 25 September, along with completing the SATAC application with the selected Flinders university course as your first preference. The school will supply your grades to the University and conditional offers will be made from 23 October into November. The offer is conditional on students successfully completing the SACE, meeting prerequisites and receiving an ATAR.

We will also be running the Flinders UniTest at the College in the upcoming holidays on Tuesday,  28 September at 9.30am. The UniTest is used in a number of different ways but almost always increases your likelihood of getting into a course. Check this link to see if this is a useful pathway to Flinders Uni for your course - https://www.flinders.edu.au/study/pathways/year-12-entry/unitest I will send out official registrations for this test in Week 8 but if a student wishes to undertake the test they do need to email me.
