2021 Murder Mystery
When the school returned to onsite learning last year the library was a hive of activity and we have enjoyed having our library full of happy students again. Amongst our normal library activities, we enjoyed two extra special highlights.
Spread over two lunchtimes, beginning at lunch on Thursday 18th November, our first event was an activity where we were open to students who had signed up to participate in a scripted role-playing activity. Lunch and refreshments were provided for all participants and a fun time was had by all. The event was centered around the reading of a will and the unmasking of an alleged murderer! Students from Years 7 to 12 enthusiastically joined into the spirit of the activity by wearing costumes and bringing their best dramatic acting skills to the event. It was fabulous to see students enjoying themselves and collaborating to work out who was the killer in a way that was not possible when we were learning remotely. Special thanks must go to Ms. Montalto for the huge amount of work she put into this special event.
Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge
At lunchtime on Tuesday 30th November 2021 the library hosted a combined celebration of all students who either successfully completed the Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge or who participated in the Victorian High Achievers Program. As we were unable to celebrate the achievements of our students in 2020, in 2021 we splurged on a burger luncheon instead of our usual pizza lunch. On behalf of the library staff, I would like to say how extra proud we are of all the students who completed the Challenge last year. The last two years have been extremely difficult for students to complete the VPRC. We had very few sessions in the library before we were thrown into remote learning. Not only did they have to complete the VPRC with only the online support of the library staff they had to complete the challenge with little access to our physical book collection. It would have been very easy for students to just give up but, instead, they committed to their reading, and we couldn’t be prouder of each of them.
Insight Creative Writing Competition
Finally, I would like to congratulate Rylee Morgan who has been a longtime library user and Book Club member who was part of the graduating Year 12 cohort of 2021. Rylee demonstrated a love of reading and creative writing since she began at TLSC in Year 7. It seems only fitting that Rylee was announced as the second prize winner in the nationwide Insight Creative Writing competition in the Year 12 category. Rylee took home $225 which she told us is going to be used to purchase some more books. We hope to one day see Rylee’s books on our shelves and being read and enjoyed by our students.
