Teacher - Chinese Language

On Friday 24 February, martial arts instructors Julian and Sophie ran an introductory session on Wing Chun martial arts with the Year 7 Chinese Language class students. The students were introduced to the history of Wing Chun and practised  basic self-defence moves. This incursion gave students an incite into Chinese culture, which relates directly back to their studies.

A huge thank you to Sifu Julian and Simo Sophie for a fun and informative class!

We learned some self-defence moves, like flicking your opponent’s eyes to blind them for a matter of time. My favourite part was the ending when the man used the knives and some other skills he knew. It was a bit scary as it was if he was going to throw the knife at you!

We learned a basic defensive move to use in a situation where some one is pulling you away (which was super effective). I really enjoyed the butterfly sword demonstration at the end and  I found the story of how it came about very interesting.

I learned a lot from the martial arts demonstration. I learnt all about self defense and all the basic moves. I even got to be a volunteer. Julian showed us how to use two moves  so we can defend and attack at the same time. He also told us to try to just walk awayfrom disagreements and try to avoid getting into this fights.

This class was great! It was great  to experience Wing-Chun and what it was like to protect ourselves physically. I personally have learned martial arts, but for those haven't ever, I think that it was a great experience for them. I really like when Shifu told us the history of Wing-Chun, because I thought that it was cool, because the nun taught the young woman only for a YEAR, and she embarrassed the village gangster thoroughly.

Shifu gave us lots of awesome advice, and techniques. I will never forget when he said: ''Always remember, two strikes at once. Flick the sand, ring the bells!'

Wing Chun is a system of self-defence to protect yourself and or others from harm -specifically on streets. There are different stages such as non-contact, contact, exchange range, pursuit and retreat. We learned how Wing Chun has principles which you must follow. Some useful information I gained was to not face your attacker straight on. Its best to go to their blind spot so then they will be forced to turn about 180 degrees so they can face you. When they are doing this you are able to kick them where it hurts the most!

I enjoyed listening to the history and how Wing Chun was created because Wing Chun is the only martial art created by a woman.

What I  really enjoyed about today was being able to laugh with the martial arts teachers and that their comments as well as how skilled they both were at martial arts. I learned  how to defend myself if anyone i don't know tried to attack me and how to do all of it properly.

I was nervous when the teacher used the butterfly knives and did a routine. But the excitement and movement of it really made me think about how, every now and then, I should practice the other moves we learned in case I ever need them. I think being prepared is very important, so this incursion was very helpful. If I ever got the chance to do another class like that one, I definitely would.
