Subject and Course Counselling Information

YEAR 10, 11 AND 12 STUDENTS and FAMILIES 

 

Term 3 is a very busy and exciting time for Year 10 & 11 students as they begin the planning for the transition to the next year level in 2018. Also the Year 12 students are planning and researching their post school pathways. 

 

The Careers Team, Ms Jane Alexander and Mrs Jenny Campbell, in partnership with Senior School Leader, Mr Paul Meager and VET/VCAL Coordinator, Mrs Sharyn Niclasen have developed a program to meet the individual needs of every student. Families will also be encouraged to be part of the support team as their son/daughter considers their subjects and pathways.

 

Listed below are the Subject and Course Counselling plans for each year level:

 

2017 YEAR 10 COURSE COUNSELLING PLAN

  1. Subject Selection Handbooks and the SSO Program are made available to students late Term 2 or early Term 3 via Compass
  2. Subject Expo on Wednesday 26th July during the school day to explore the range of subjects available at the College for Year 11’s 2018
  3. Parent Information sessions on the early evening of Wednesday 26th July at a time and location tbc
  4. Students enter information onto the Subject Selection Program (SSO)  in preparation for Subject Counselling session on Monday 31st July
  5. Individual Course Counselling session on Monday 31st July with 25 min appointments available between 12 noon and 7pm. There will be 8 Subject Counsellors available for appointments. Parents are invited to attend the session with their son/daughter. Parents will be able to book a time via the booking system similar to the Parent/Teacher/student interviews. Details will be provided via Compass.

Please note: Year 10 students will not have normal classes on this day BUT each student is expected to attend the Subject Counselling session in FULL SCHOOL UNIFORM.

 

2017 YEAR 11 COURSE COUNSELLING PLAN

  1. Subject Selection Handbooks and the SSO Program are made available to students late Term 2 or early Term 3 via Compass
  2. Individual Subject Counselling session of 15 mins during Term 3 Weeks 2, 3 & 4.

A 15 mins appointment with a Course Counsellor will be allocated to each student via Compass and also placed on the Senior School noticeboard.

 

2017 YEAR 12 POST SCHOOL PATHWAYS COUNSELLING

  1. All Year 12 VCAL students have been involved in Post School Pathways counselling over the past 3 weeks of Term 2, for 15 mins each with Ms Alexander and Mrs Jenny Campbell.
  2. During Term 3 Week 2 there will be a VTAC briefing session for Yr 12 VCE students and Yr 12 VCAL students wishing to apply for courses through VTAC. Details tbc.
  3. Yr 12 VCE students will have their Round 1 25 mins Post School Pathways counselling in Term 3 during Weeks 6-7 for Round 1 VTAC focused discussions. A 25 mins appointment with a Course Counsellor will be allocated to each student via Compass and also placed on the Senior School noticeboard.
  4. Yr 12 students applying for post school courses through VTAC will have a Round 2 15 min appointment during weeks 9 & 10 of Term 3.
  5. There will be a Yr 12 briefing for all students during Term 3 Week 8 to discuss scholarship and SEAS applications. More detail will be provided closer to the date but students are encouraged to explore scholarship options via the individual tertiary institutions websites e.g. Latrobe University, Melbourne Polytechnic.
  6. Following the release of Yr 12 VCE results in mid-December, students are allocated a 25 min counselling session in relation to Change of Preference for their applied courses and /or to discuss alternative pathways.

We look forward to the discussions with your sons and daughters as they continue to develop the knowledge and skills to make subject, course and pathway choices that best suits them. Discussions with family and friends are also very important to increase their awareness of the world of work, training and study.
