Reception Curriculum News

Technology

In our learning spaces children have access to  ipads, netbooks and interactive whiteboards which will be used on a daily basis to support their learning journey. Students are focusing on developing creativity and innovation skills using a variety of programs. We will be using this equipment to differentiate our curriculum and to be able to work in a variety of small groups. IT supports the children in all areas of learning with a key focus on oral language, literacy and numeracy.

HASS

Our HASS units for semester 1 will include “What is School?” with a major focus on the LNPS values of Care & Concern, Honesty, Respect & Pursuit of Excellence as well as “How can I be the happiest healthiest me”.

Each day the children will participate in a healthy eating and physical activity program. Being active and making healthy choices are both important parts of our learning program and link directly to our HASS studies. Children are encouraged to choose a healthy snack from their lunch boxes including fruit, vegetables, cheese and yoghurt. Physical activity each day will incorporate fundamental movement skills of body management, locomotor and object control.

Many curriculum areas are embedded within these HASS units.

The ‘You Can Do It’ program is also embedded into many curriculum areas. This program is a whole school focus at LNPS. The programs core purpose is the development of young people’s social and emotional capabilities, including:

Confidence

Persistence

Organisation

Getting Along

Resilience

Later on in the semester we will be looking at Personal and family histories. We will be looking at the following questions -

 * What is my history and how do I know?

* What stories do other people tell me about the past?

* How can stories of my past be told and shared?

Through studies of their family, familiar people and their own history, students look at evidence of the past, exposing them to an early understanding that the past is different from the present. They come to understand why some events are important in their own and others’ lives, and how different people commemorate events that are important to them. We will look at who the people in their family are, where they were born and raised and how they are related to each other.

The Arts

The Arts curriculum comprises five subjects:

Dance, Drama, Media Arts, Music and Visual Arts.

In Visual Arts we will be exploring different mediums such as paint, crayons, and pencils. We will experiment with different techniques, technologies and processes to make artworks. We will create and display artworks to communicate ideas.  Visual arts will be a part of our Discovery Time in the morning and shared Activity Board. Visual Arts will be closely linked to other curriculum areas.

We will also sing songs and dance as part of music.  We will explore, improvise and organise ideas to make dance sequences using the elements of dance. We will use fundamental movement skills to develop technical skills when practising dance sequences We will watch others dance and respect those around us when they are dancing.

In Drama the children will take part in purposeful dramatic play focusing on experiencing the roles and situations they create. They will take turns in offering and accepting ideas, and staying in role in short improvisations. They will use role play to act out familiar events or stories.

In Media Arts we will use technology to record images for others to view.

This semester our receptions classes will spend a few weeks with a teacher from our team specialising in one of the areas of The Arts. We  can't wait to show you what we can create!
