Technologies in the Real World
The technologies courses at John XXIII incorporate project-based learning to teach students skills they will use throughout life both in their careers and at home.
Year 7 Digital Technology, Mrs. Anna Davila
Year 7 students put a creative spin on the vintage Tomogatchi and worked through the design process to create an interactive game using the BBC Micro:bit. They researched what made the original toy fun and engaging and thought about how they can make improvements to bring it back to market for the next generation. The team of Jenny Biddle, Brooke Tome, and Jana Schlaich created a game called 'Hatcho' to teach children about the responsibility of caring for an animal. The team of Ruby Rose Johnstone, Hazel Delaney, and Imogen Thompson created a game called 'Travel Buddy' to virtually travel to different places during a time when airplane travel is not possible.
Year 8 Engineering Design, Mr. Nathan Munns
The Year 8’s competed against each other in the CO2 Rocket Car Challenge. Students spent several weeks researching aerodynamic design, 3D modelling, and carving their ideas into a working balsawood prototype. Some students were surprised at the cars which performed best and reflected on how they would do better next time. Congratulations to Jackson Bosnich for winning the competition with the best performing car on the day.
Year 9 Food Technology, Miss Melinda Toleman
Year 9 students are exploring sustainability in Food Technology investigating food sources, food miles, food waste, carbon footprint and responsible use of food. They made a basic biscuit and flavoured them with items that are in stock in our storeroom, rather than buying in more produce. This activity promotes using ingredients in season, buying local produce, growing your own produce, and using what you have on hand to reduce food wastage.
Year 11/12 Materials and Design Technology - Wood, Mr. Jordan Sell
Year 11 and 12 MDT students are currently working through the design and construction of a hall table. They are encouraged to research unique treatments and explore new skills like the use of resin and laser cutting to enhance the artistic design and quality of the piece. With the table design individual to each student, some are getting creative and have chosen to make the popular river table. The two-part resin is mixed along with a pigment of their choice and left to cure for three days, resulting in a unique and very impressive tabletop. Lucas Russell chose a navy and pearlescent teal to make the water more realistic.

ACC Cross-Country
On Thursday 27 May, John XXIII took a team of over 70 athletes to the Associated Catholic Colleges Cross-Country carnival. Each race had up to 450 students competing from 76 schools.
Our students brought so much passion, determination, and spirit to the day. As a result of this, coupled with their hard training since Week 2, Term 1, our team were victorious on the day taking out the Overall School’s Champion shield for the first time since 1993. We also took home the Overall Girls Champion, U/13 Girls and U/16 Girls shields. A special acknowledgement must be made to the Year 11 and 12 students for competing during their exam period, without their dedication our historical win would not have happened.
There were several outstanding performances throughout the day with a number of students finishing in the top 20.
