Ready to Learn Plans

Matthew Bodley, Andrew Rayment and Tate Hopkinson

In our last newsletter we discussed how Teachers use our "Behaviour Response Continuum" as the framework to manage student behaviour in all learning spaces in the College.

An essential element of the  Behaviour Response Continuum is our students "Ready to Learn Plans". These plans help students by giving them a list of 5-minute strategies they can use to help them to either engage in a lesson more productively or de-escalate their stress levels to control their emotions and behaviour, the strategies are:

In class strategies (5min):

  • Head on desk
  • Quiet Reading
  • Quiet Drawing

 External to class strategies (5min)

  • Go for a walk
  • Get a drink
  • Sit outside the classroom
  • Shoot hoops on the Dream Courts

Ready to Learn Plans are an initiative which has been implemented by our Student CARE Captains following a school visit to Monterey Secondary College, (winner of the Lindsey Thompson award for Excellence in Education in 2022) to see the incredible changes they made in their safe and orderly learning environment.

From their visit, our students decided to bring Ready to Learn Plans into our College and the framework can be seen below. This process is widely used by both teachers and students to help students to engage in the learning and Teachers to create safe and orderly learning environments.
