Womin Djeka – Hello and welcome to another edition of the ‘THE WESTERN PORT WORD’ which will continue to provide our community with a range of updates throughout the year. It is a little hard to believe that we are over halfway through a busy term 3 which has been an extremely positive one for the College with the start to the new semester of learning and electives along with some awesome events since our last edition of the Western Port Word landed in term 2.
Campfire Conversation – WPSC Gathering Space
On Thursday 27th July, we hosted our inaugural Campfire Conversation with an open invitation to school, parent/carer, and community members to discuss current school level actions and opportunities relating to cultural safety and awareness for our school. This event was largely run by students within our Western Port Mob who facilitated small group discussions around the important inclusions for a gathering space which will be located at the front of our school near the main entry. With this just the start to these discussions, it was a fantastic event to be part of and I look forward to the discussion continuing with our key stakeholders and the start to works in this space.
Senior School formal
On Monday 14th August we had our senior school formal at Toscano’s Hasting led by the efforts of the formal committee and Mr. Nolan. We love it when these types of events happen - because they are completely designed and driven by student voice and agency! With their secondary education journey significantly impacted by a global pandemic, we are so pleased for our senior students to have the opportunity to celebrate senior school life at Western Port SC through this event. Feedback from the venue was incredibly complimentary of our students who were proud representatives of our school in the community.
Parent/Carer surveys
Our strategic work is informed by evidence and data gathered from multiple sources and the parent/carer survey sent out by relevant Assistant Principal’s is one of those important data sets. Your voice and feedback is very important to us in shaping our school to continue to be in the best position to cater for all young people in our community.
If you haven’t had a chance to complete this survey, please keep an eye out for future reminders through compass and complete this prior to the survey closing on Friday 8th September.
State Cross Country
Tui Dewerson-Bogue – came an incredible 50th out of 112 in the Under 14 girls state cross country race earlier this term which is a remarkable achievement. Congratulations Tui – we are all incredibly proud of you and look forward to supporting you in future events.
Hands On Learning
This important component of our approach to inclusive education which provides real-world hands-on experiences with a focus on personal development plans. Our students are currently working on improving the front entry of our school with expert leadership from our resident artisans and program leaders John and Belle.
Building Project Update
We are very pleased to see the capital works project really coming along as we enter the final 6 months of the build which is due for completion later in the year. Our young people deserve nothing less than state of the art facilities and this project certainly delivers on that.
I am so proud that our students have had their artwork included in so many aspects of this build including the precast concrete façade which was recently secured in place with a 250-ton crane.
We look forward to our senior school hub, junior school hub and wellness centre all coming online and operational for the 2024 school year as we welcome our new year 7 students to the Western Port family.
Student Led Conferences – Thursday 7th September
With only three weeks until student led conferences, I encourage all parents/carers to check in with students to see how the progress of their learning can be supported from home to ensure that completion of required formative and summative assessment tasks by set due dates. Due to the disruption of our building works, our final student led conferences for the year will be completed online with the plan to return to an onsite model in 2024. If you have any questions or require any support for students at a school level, please contact the relevant learning level leader within our college via compass emails or by calling the school on 59791577.
Kind Regards,
Chris Quinn
