Book Week

Week 7 ~ Term 3 ~ 2023

Each year across Australia, the Children’s Book Council of Australia (CBCA) brings children and books together by celebrating Book Week. This year’s event will be celebrated between 19th - 25th Augustat Holy Name.

This year's theme of "READ, GROW, INSPIRE", signifies all the wonderful experiences and delicious language books bring to us, to help us do exactly that, read, grow, inspire and be inspired.

The Book Week committee is putting the very final touches on our Book Week celebration activities for next week.

Book Week:  "WAY TOO COOL" Performance

Tuesday 22nd August at 2:30pm, in the Hall.

On Tuesday all children will join the magnificent team from Perform Education to watch Craig Christies 2023 Book Week performance "Way tool Cool".  Craig Christie has linked the Book Week theme of "READ, GROW, INSPIRE", to encourage everyone to care for and respect each other through friendship.

Henry and Marley have been friends since they met at kindergarten, a long time ago now. They’ve been on adventures, shared their hopes and dreams and generally always looked out for each other. But lately Henry has started to think he is WAY TOO COOL to hang out and in fact – he’s not acting like Henry at all.

WAY TOO COOL! explores the CBCA Children’s Book Week theme: READ, GROW, INSPIRE, a highly interactive musical adventure!

Costume Parade

Wednesday 23rd August at 9am, in the Hall.

Dress up, dress up - one and all and come along to join our gorgeous learners as they parade around as their favourite books, or characters.

See if you can recognise our teachers as they join the dress up parade too.

Children will vote on their favourite costumes once back in their classrooms and winners will be announced at the end of day on Wednesday.

But do keep an eye out for our special guest - who will be giving out a few prizes at the Parade too!

House Activities - Read Arounds and Book Voting

On Thursday afternoon children will join in House group activities and share their favourite books - please bring a book from home to share with a House friend. They will also engage with other house buddies as they work their way through some fun reading activities.

They will also vote on their favourite book. On Friday we will celebrate the HNPE best book as decided by the children.

Loads more fun daily activities to be explored in classrooms...

We do have a few other little treats happening throughout he week - so keep asking the children about their day at school.

Please check out the shortlisted books for this year this link https://cbca.org.au/shortlist-2023.

Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge

Yes, we are just wild about reading!

Congratulations to these wonderful readers who have completed the Premiers’ Reading Challenge!

Freddie F1/2F

Just a reminder that the Challenge is open to all Victorian children from birth to Year 10 in recognition of the importance of reading for literacy development. It is not a competition; but a personal challenge for children to read a set number of books by 8 September 2023.

Children from Prep to Year 2 are encouraged to read or ‘experience’  30 books with their parents and teachers.

Children from Year 3 to Year 6 are challenged to read 15 books.

All children who meet the Challenge will receive a certificate of achievement signed by the Victorian Premier and former Premiers.

Fun with Literacy @Home

Everyone loves a birthday party!

This fortnight we are encouraging you to explore books that are having a birthday this year, or those that have recently had a birthday.

You might like to design and plan a birthday celebration for one of these, or one of your own books.

Here is another one of my books. This is one for the older children - middle grade fiction series. This book kicked off an amazing series by Garth Nix.

Mister Monday: The Keys to the Kingdom.     by Garth Nix

This is the first in a truly magical fantasy adventure series.

It follows Arthur Penhaligon, a twelve-year-old boy who discovers that he is the heir to an otherworldly House.

He  must fulfil a mysterious Will in order to claim it from seven antagonistic Trustees.

Do you know this book?

If this is Mister Monday...can you guess what might form part of the title of the next book in the series?

This book is 20 years old this year. It was first published in 2003. Can you imagine what you might be doing when you are 20 years old?

Super Literacy Challenge

I have some very nice little prizes that I am giving to the first 3 children each fortnight, who come to me with their responses to these "Super Literacy Challenges". But you have to be one of the first 3 to she me your responses...and you have to be correct of course!

Are you going to give it a go? You will also have your name published in the newsletter as a "Super Literacy Winner"

Super Literacy Challenge Number 2

Words from Words

This fortnight's word is "explorers"

E  X  P  L  O  R  E  R   S

Your challenge is to make as many smaller words as you can from this one word.

  • You can only use the each letter once in each word.
  • You can mix and match the letters to make your words.

HINT: There are over 20 words you can make!

...well, actually there are really 164 words that can be made, but I will settle for 20.

Good Luck - don't forget to see me first to claim your place and to have your name recorded in the newsletter as a Super Literacy Winner and collect your prize.
