A MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Pitsa Binnion

This past week I have been reminded of the importance of the message “it takes a village to raise a child”.

All of us need to remain vigilant and do all we can to be ever present in the lives of our children.

The school is such an important part of our student’s lives but only one part. We have worked tirelessly over many years to create a caring, safe and responsive community. Our culture is something that makes me very proud. It is palpable when you are part of the everyday life here at school.

I do believe we have very extensive programs that help educate our young people to become respectful, kind, compassionate and empathetic.

They achieve incredible academic success, but more importantly they become wonderful human beings who continue to work hard to make a difference to the society in which we live.

The Leadership team, Wellbeing team and Student Managers will continue to work with students to ensure their personal experience is positive and always safe.

We are so blessed to have the incredible support of so many families.

Parents can only experience school through the lens of their own son or daughter and as the saying goes “you can only be as happy as your most unhappiest child”.

When your young one is experiencing hardship and navigating a difficult emotional or social situation it is traumatic to watch them despair.

As a school we will do our best to navigate these situations and be supportive and responsive.  We are very vigilant and address all concerns that people raise and follow Department regulations at all times.

As schools we are all working very hard to ensure students are respectful and responsible and demonstrate good values.

NEW CAMPUS

We had another visit to the East Village campus and both Mr Kan and I were absolutely amazed at the stunning facility. So much work is being undertaken and we are very proud. Curriculum is being designed and we are excited at the prospect of all our Year 8s & 9s starting there next year.

Pi DAY

On Monday 15 and Tuesday 16 March, McKinnon celebrated Pi Day with the annual Pi Reciting Competition. Class champions from Mathematics classes competed to see who could recite the most decimal places of the irrational number pi, to determine overall year level champions.

All participants were impressive and will receive house points towards the House Cup. During the competition, everyone was anxiously waiting for Chris Liolios’ (Year 11) turn knowing how well he did last year, with his mum, Sophie, even coming to watch and record his recital.

The crowd couldn’t wipe the smiles off their faces throughout Chris’ turn as he broke the school record, which was his own record from last year, by 144 places, reciting an incredible 1000 places of pi. Congratulations Chris, we can’t wait to see what next year brings!

I would like to acknowledge and thank Ms Krommydas and Miss Mauger for giving students this opportunity to shine!

2021 HOUSE MUSIC FESTIVAL

What can I say! Congratulations to all the students involved in the House Music competition on Wednesday 17 March. The musical talent never ceases to amaze me.

As I said at the event, it is the only totally student lead activity and it is a highlight in our calendar. It was indeed great to see students from Year 7 to Year 12 working together enjoying wonderful relationships and showcasing their exceptional talent.

The Music House Captains were inspiring and the atmosphere electric. Thank you Ms Vrisk and Mrs Ford for their organization of this wonderful annual event.

May the music banner of McKinnon continue to fly high.

The above events are really ‘food for the soul’. To see students participating in these activities is in fact joyful. Congratulations to all involved.
