Music

The Mazenod Music Department would like to welcome all students and families to the 2021 school year. We have a talented cohort of musicians across all year levels and they are very eager to perform to live audiences once again.

For current musicians, we have a full calendar booked, including performances at the Melbourne School Band’s Festival, the Victorian Jazz Competition and the Script Jazz Club. Students will have the opportunity to attend workshops with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, professional vocalists and instrumentalists. Musicians will also be participating in the Inaugural Mass and preparing for the Mission Action Day Concert.

Instrumental lessons have begun (please see MAZCOM for timetables) and ensemble rehearsals will begin in week 3 (Monday 8th February.) From Year 8 onwards, all students learning an instrument at the College are expected to be part of at least one ensemble.

The Mazenod/Avila musical for 2021 is Ben Elton’s “We Will Rock You!” which features the music of Queen. This is a great opportunity for students to experience a professional performance atmosphere with peers from Avila College. Auditions will take place in the Founders’ Complex during the first week of March.

Finally, we wish our incoming Year 7 students all the best for the start of the school year, and we strongly encourage them to take the opportunity to learn an instrument.

New students who opt to take up an instrument will move into Year 7 enrichment music classes, where they will perform in an ensemble and be a part of a musical team. It’s a wonderful and memorable experience for all students, regardless of whether they learn for 6 months of 6 years. There is a positive culture of hard work and community that exists amongst our musicians. They are very supportive of one another and share a real sense of kinship.

If you have any questions regarding instrumental music lessons at Mazenod, you are most welcome to contact our music reception via: musicreception@mazenod.vic.edu.au or explore the music department via the “Music” tile on MAZCOM.

We sincerely look forward to sharing the joy of music with the Mazenod community over the next 12 months.
