CIVIL CONSTRUCTION TASTER PROGRAM

What is Civil construction? - Civil construction is the creation of infrastructure involving anything to do with water, earth, or transport. ... The civil construction industry consists of the individuals and companies involved in the planning, creation, and designing of our infrastructureCivil construction truly shapes the world around us. Check out the link below that shows the different roles within this industry.

http://careerincivil.com/roles-in-civil/

Lowanna College was fortunate to be part of the Civil Construction Taster program kindly funded by the Headstart Program and Cluster Director Tom Hallinan. Selected students participated in the weeklong program that began with a four-day course being delivered by ACE Training. The course offered units within the Certificate III in Civil Construction. The units the students completed were:

  • Prepare to work safely in the construction industry (also called construction induction or white card)
  • Control traffic with a stop-slow bat
  • Conduct civil construction wheeled loader operations (front end loader)

Some of the activities included erect temporary traffic signs and barriers, use stop-slow bat, learn to communicate on a two-way radio, and operate a front-end loader under instruction. Students also discovered about OH & S with a focus on identifying risks in operating machinery followed by some time in the elevated work platform (boom lift).

The last day of the program was an Industry site visit going to Latrobe City and Baw Baw Shire depots. Here we discovered the urban maintenance, construction, roads, arborists, and horticulture sections. Students heard from experienced workers about their roles, along with the diversity of working within local government.

Congratulations to the students who participated; Todd Sultana, Cody Maxwell, Tom Wolf, and Ozzi Porter. The students not only gained valuable industry knowledge but credit for 2 Senior VCAL units all whilst enjoying the program. Well done!

MY CAREER INSIGHT (Year 9 Morrisby Career Discovery tool)

My Career Insights is a program for all Year 9 students in Victorian Government secondary schools. My Career Insights is designed to help students to discover, develop, and drive their career planning. It is a unique opportunity for them to learn more about their strengths and abilities while exploring potential career options – giving them the confidence to start taking control of their future.

Students will be given the opportunity to complete a series of questionnaires and quizzes designed to help them learn more about themselves and their values, preferences, skills, and strengths. This is called a Morrisby profile. Once students complete their Morrisby profile, they will have an individualised 30-minute career discussion with an external independent Careers Counsellor. This may be face-to-face at school or via a video conference.

The Year 9 cohort will complete the Morrisby profile careers online assessment during the week of Monday, 26th April – Friday, 30th April.

Students have been given permission notices to take home for parents/guardians to complete.
