The Patch Program

In the garden

Over the last three weeks, the grade 1s and 2s have been exploring the changes in the garden over Autumn, tuning in to nature to write seasonal snapshots and acrostic poems.

Autumn has also marked the ripening of our first crop of Midgen Berries in our bush tucker garden.  These tiny edible berries are sweet morsels with an interesting eucalyptusy flavour.  We look forward to have a larger crop next year so that students can try these bush treats.

In the kitchen

As our term of cooking drew to a close, our Foundation and Grade 1 students enjoyed their first cooking classes at Blackburn Primary School. The grade 1s enjoyed creating and consuming some delicious Apple and Carrot muffins. The Foundies learnt and practiced a range of skills including kitchen hygiene, recipe reading and measuring while making playdough. To colour the playdough, we used water from cooked red cabbages from the Patch.  When used alone with flour and oil, the dough was purple, when vinegar was added, the dough was pink and, when bicarbonate of soda was added, the dough was blue! A little bit of kitchen magic, to kick off their cooking careers.

Patch Cooking Helpers Required

We are currently seeking volunteers to assist with Patch Cooking Classes during term 2. It is a wonderful opportunity to be involved with your child's education. No experience is necessary however all helpers must have a working with children check. Click on the link to sign up now for the term ahead!
